Durham Club Teams Dominate Guelph Competition
On Friday October 20, 240 boys and girls from clubs across Durham competed at O A C Guelph in 1940 Dominion Final projects. Durham teams claimed wins in Swine Grain and Potato, with Grenville and Peterborough also taking titles. Durham players included Ronald Brooks, Earle Brown, Sam Turner, Keith Stapleton, Richard VanCamp, Bill Ferguson, Harold Hammond, Arnold Brackenbridge, Newton Selby, Charlie Peacock, Paul Vankirk and Gordon Wilson.

Kirby Church Anniversary Services Reported
Kirby Church held its anniversary services on Sunday October 22 with sermons by Mr Saywell and Mr Young and special music by local and Newcastle choirs. Mrs Milton Wannan is improving after an operation in Bowmanville hospital. Local residents visited relatives in Port Hope, Port Perry, Leskard and Cee Hill on Sunday.

Noble, District Home Economist E A Summers and junior farmer Bruce Taylor of Enniskillen coached three Durham County teams at Guelph and are preparing to coach them further for the Dominion Competition in Toronto on November 13.
Switzerland From A Woman's Viewpoint At Lions Club
Mrs. George Miller spoke to Newcastle Lions on a Swiss life viewed through a woman’s eyes. She described Geneva streets cleaned daily with water, terraced vineyards, neat houses, cattle kept indoors, and a culture blending Italian German and French. She noted no unemployment, strong democracy, high cost of living, and youth hostels for travellers.

Fifty Year Jewel for James C. McRoberts
A fifty year membership jewel and a bouquet of mums were presented by Owen Sound Odd Fellows Lodges to James C. McRoberts in recognition of his fifty years with Orono Lodge No. 436 Ontario. Noble Grand McMillan and Bro. Collegehan presented the honor as they visited Mr. McRoberts who is recovering from illness and staying with his niece Mrs. Wilfred Wright at 867 Fifth Avenue East.

Dynamite Box Unearthed by Toronto Worker
Herbert Tom of Toronto struck a wooden box six inches deep while digging near Wesleyville cottage. The box contained 200 sticks of dynamite wrapped in wax paper and dated July 15, 1939. Police secured the box and handed it to a highway contractor for disposal.

Open Discussion Of Local Problems Highlights Orono Meeting
The Women's Institute held its Annual Pamel discussion on Holiday evening October 20 in Orono Township Hall with good attendance. Convenors Mrs. Cobbledick and Mrs. Cornish led the citizenship programme. Mr. Lyce t acted as chairman. Topics covered include Orono Park by Reeve Woodyard, Red Cross, swimming pool and figure skating, public school music by Neil Stewart, Orono Public Library by Mrs. Porter, Girl Guides training by Miss Staples, and schooling as community relation. Community discussions suggested revenue for park upkeep as tanks and tennis counts require repairs. Red Cross activities and safety programs were praised. music education and library services were detailed with plans to broaden participation. Musical numbers, a solo by William Mitchell and a duet by Rainey and Chapman, closed with a lunch hosted by the committee.
