Folk School Refresher Draws Durham County Enthusiasts

About thirty participants from Durham and across Southern Ontario attended a Polk School Refresher Course at Cherry Hill Farm Unionville. They discussed future folk schools, shared experiences, and heard talks by Alfred Perry and Dr Roby Kidd, ending with a Thanksgiving service in Markham and renewed commitment to rural education.

Victoria County Lads Win Inter County Plowing Laurels

Gerald Bell of Woodville and Ivan Bell of Kirkfield led Victoria County to the top prize in the Inter-County horse plowing sod competition at the International Plowing Match in Alliston. The two cousins will tour central United States for two weeks next spring with County Agricultural Representative LeRoy G. Brown, visiting major agricultural and conservation projects. Gerald Bell trained under former International champion Alvin Mark, while Ivan Bell sailed under his father Melville Bell.

Miss Annie Drummond of Newcastle Dead at 88

Miss Annie Drummond, longtime Newcastle resident and last survivor of her family, died Friday October 3, 1950, in her 89th year at Mrs. Herbert Browns home. She taught at an Toronto girls school before returning to Newcastle to live her Christian life. Survived by niece Miss Ethel Drummond and nephews Angthax, Kenneth Drummond, and grand nephew Alex R. Drummond. Funeral at Newcastle United Church with Rev. Turner. burial Bond Head Cemetery. Pallbearers named Beaman, Hancock, Britton, Blackburn, Jose, Allin.

The Wo men s Christian Temperance Union held a regular meeting on Tuesday at Miss Sherwin s Centre Street home. Sixteen members attended as committees reported on the gold medal contest and decided to hold the event on October 27.

The Oshawa Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Society Fall Rally splits into Western and Eastern sections. The Western Session meets Oct 25 at Myrtle United Church with Miss Susan Smyth of Toronto as guest speaker and dinner by Myrtle women. Eastern Session gathers Oct 26 at Maple Grove United Church with afternoon speaker Mrs M Aubrey Love of Toronto. Lunch and closing at 8:45 p.m. Attendance urged for both sessions.

Monster Kendal potato weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces

Last week Ree Alliott of Kendal brought a monstrous tuber to the office. It measured 8 inches long and 6 inches wide and weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces. A small cavity was found when the potato was cut open.

Cobourg Man Elected President of Teachers

Gordon King of Cobourg was elected president of District 9 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation at its first annual meeting in Cobourg on October 14. More than 120 teachers attended from area high schools, with 28 from PCWS. The noon dinner featured Hon. Harold Scott as guest speaker.

Kendal Wins Durham County Baseball Championship

On a cool October day Kendal defeated Bethany to claim the Rural Baseball Championship. Crowds filled Newcastle Ball Park as farm teams showcased strategy and grit from youth to veterans. Pitching and defense limited errors, with Bethany’s Reynolds and infield delivering stout resistance until the final out.

Retendering For Construction Work On Millson Bridge

Clarke Township Council opened bids for the Millson bridge project but rejected the sole tender as too high. New tenders close October 30 with hopes to start in early November and complete the bridge within the year.

Large Congregations Attend Thank Offering Services

Park Street United Church held its Thank offering services at 11 a.m. in Orono and 7 p.m. in the Township Hall. The large attendance reflected the congregation and friends giving thanks and hearing guest speaker Rev. J. K. Mott.

Orono Band Plans Second Musical Night

Following strong praise for the Orono Band concert, a second musical evening is set for Friday November 10. Members with notable musical backgrounds rehearse weekly for the program featuring vocal performances by the Hivcock Trio of Cobourg. A dance will follow the concert in the village hall.
