Seek Rural Municipalities To Join Development Association

Orono and Clarke township representatives attended a Lake Ontario Development Association zone meeting in Cobourg led by Elmer Banting. The group urged rural municipalities to join to boost agriculture, industry, and tourism across the Lake Ontario area from Darlington to Belleville and Kawarthas.

Biochemist Dr Heard Dies at 49 in Montreal Home

Dr Robert Donall Hoskins Heard aged 49 a professor of Biochemistry at McGill University died suddenly at his Montreal home on September 8 he is survived by his wife Grace Mae Abbott two sons C W Kenneth and D Alan Freeman of Montreal his mother Mrs Chas E Heard of St Thomas and his in laws the Hoskins family Funeral held in St Thomas with connections to Orono through the Doncaster lineage

Efficient Farmer Goodfellow urges unity and self reliance

At the Lake Ontario Development Association dinner in Cobourg Hon W A Goodfellow warned against overreliance on government and urged farmers to unite, market cooperatively, and lead by individual effort. He praised Ontario's potential and noted deep water harbours and a strong tobacco and fruit belt in Northumberland.

The Crewe W A Held Regular Meeting

The Crewe W A meeting was held Thursday afternoon October 10 in the Sunday School room with President Mrs H Allen presiding. Devotional by Mrs E Rainey focused on service and truth from John 17. Minutes of September and October 3 executive were read and approved. Plans included catering for the 4 Junior Farmers Banquet November 2 and Teachers Federation November 7. A loose collection of $138.81 was reported. thanks extended to Mr Ford and visiting quartet. Delegates were chosen for the Oshawa W A Presbytery meeting October 29. There were fourteen ladies present.

Brownies and Guides treated Tuesday as a holiday and missed their regular meeting night. Joanne Rutherford taught bed roll packing while Mrs Donald Hamm helped form a new fourth patrol. New patrol leaders Milene Graham Marilyn Copbledick Joan Allen Connie Tyrrell earned All-round Cards.

Cab Paper Drive This Saturday in Orono Village

The Orono Cab Pack will collect paper this Saturday afternoon October 19. Bags should be bundled and placed along the curb to support scouting activities and pack needs.

Here Comes The Guides And Brewnres Travelling Basket

Local Association launches a fundraising basket for the Guide movement to buy books camping gear and uniforms. The project travels through village homes from October 19 to November 19 aiding Brown Owl Tawny Owl and Lady Lieutenants and supported by mothers with young families.

Orone Oddfellow Dance Draws Enticing Prizes Saturday

Orone Oddfellow hosts an October 19 dance event at two halls the Western Chappies in Fown Hall and the Farrow Old Tymers in the 1.0.0.7. Hall with eight prize drawings at 11 15 p m including a doll a Sunbeam Deluxe Toaster Remington Electric Razor and fishing gear plus a wooden rifle and a bushel of McIntosh apples. Proceeds go to the Hall Building Fund admission 50 cents.

Orono Chamber Plans Village Brochure Publication

The Orono Chamber of Commerce directors met at Orono Restaurant with eight present including H. M. Mercer and S. B. Rutherford to approve a four page brochure on the Village. A print run of 250 copies was approved and the brochure will feature services activities churches lodges and local highways. The next chamber meeting is set for October 24 at the Orono Restaurant.

Heaters Report Successful Pheasant Hunt

Pheasant season opened in Clarke Township on Saturday and will run three weeks. Darlington Township also extended their open season to the same period. The Clarke opening drew many hunters with several claiming bag limits, especially those with bird dogs. Game Warden Ken Tolmie called the hunt very successful and noted the three week period reduced opening day crowd.

Six Team Loop Probable In Lakeshore Inter League

Lakeshore Hockey Association met in Lindsay on Tuesday evening with four definite entrants Bowmanville Orono Combines Lindsay Lakefield Cobourg. Port Hope considered entry but withdrew over cash guarantee terms. may still enter from Port Hope or Trenton with renewed talks. League could be six teams. play to start in early November with arrangements for home series against Oakville Seniors.
