Five contestants entered Clarke Township Public Speaking Contest on Friday October 18 to choose two winners for the county event in Orono on November 1. Ross Brown and Helen Turner won. other participants included Verna Berry Melville Gilbert Peggy Stevenson Francis Cowan and Francis Cowan replacing Berry. Judges were Mrs J C Famblyn Mrs Wm Wright and Mr L G McGinnis.

Mrs. Rolph outlined a five day budgeting schedule and do’s and don’ts for gracious living while announcing next talks on ironing and mending with a nylon hosiery prize for best wool darn. Executive plans for weekly Mothercraft clases were shared and plant care talks covered cutting slips. Sewing and handcraft classes continued with future demonstrations on seam finishes and sewing machine attachments. A honey prize was won by Mrs. L. G. McGinnis.

Polio Cases Rise in Northumberland Durham Health Unit
Two children from Warkworth Percy Township and two adults in Toronto hospitals are among polio cases. One 3 year old and one 10 year old were admitted to Riverdale Isolation Hospital and Sick Children Hospital respectively. An 18 year old boy and a 14 year old woman near Warkworth require care. Total cases in the area reach nine with many showing improvement. province reports peak in August and a general decline with over half of cases non paralytic.

The Park Street United Church anniversary services drew large crowds at both morning and evening sessions. Rev. Harold Stainton of Mimteo delivered two sermons, and the choir led by Mrs. R. H. Brown performed with Miss Elford Rainey Best Sutton and Mr. Alden Haw of Toronto. The evening featured another anthem and solo by Haw. Flowers adorned the church and treasurer W. J. Meat and Butter Coupons Lose Validity After October 31
Old ration book meat coupons Q-1 to Q-4 and M-51 to M-55 along with butter coupons R-18 to R-21 and B-26 to B-28 will no longer be valid for meat purchases after October 31. The change applies to both old and new coupon books.
Township decides on machinery orders and delays
Kay seconded by Lowery moved to lay the matter over for next year. The amendment failed and the original motion passed by one vote. Delivery of the machine is expected by May 15 1947. A 68 horsepower Deisel 4 wheel drive motor grader with a snowplow is on order for winter use, to be delivered in November. Half the cost will be paid by the Ontario Department of Highways.
