Five Poliomyelitis Cases Reported in Toronto Area

Health unit records five polio cases this year. An adult 51 from a Cramahe Township farm near Castleton died October 11 at Riverdale Isolation Hospital Toronto after admission October 8. A 9 year old child admitted October 12 from Warkworth confirmed polio with satisfactory condition. A 10 year old from Warkworth is under observation as a suspect case.

Orono Homecraft Guild Forms At Second Meeting

More than sixty attendees at the second homemaking class meeting chose the official title The Orono Homecraft Guild and fixed Wednesday evenings as class night. Mrs J E O'Boyle will serve as Secretary Treasurer with talks on nutrition budgeting and crafts scheduled, including knitting crocheting and tatting demonstrations and a pattern exchange program. The group raffled two pounds of butter won by Mrs J Reid.

Local Holsteins Win At Regional Championship Fair

Durham County entries excel at the fifth annual Regional Championship Holstein Show held October 9 in Peterboro. In the Inter-County Calf Club Competition Durham won first place with Ontario second and Hastings third. Prize winners include John Cruickshank for second prize two-year old heifer and ninth prize three-year old heifer. H J Brooks and W W Werry for third prize Junior Yearling Bull. A Muir & Sons plus others with multiple placings in bulls and heifers. Durham placed third in the County Herd Competition while Ontario led.

Community Club Hosts Halloween Party and Double Shower

Wo mans Christian Temperance Union Holds October Meeting

The Wo mans Christian Temperance Union met on Tuesday with Mrs. H Walsh presiding. Miss Edith Sherwin led a Thanksgiving devotional and plans for the Medal Contest on October 25 were set. Committees were appointed for program lunch books contestants judges and medals with ticket prices 25c and 15c.

Mrs Gerald Shackleton Orone Dies at 28

Mrs Gerald Shackleton nee Leonora Ball dies in Toronto General Hospital at twenty eight years eight months after eight weeks of illness. She was daughter of Edwin and Mrs Ball of Clarke Township and wife of Gerald Shackleton. Survived by son and parents and two brothers. Funeral held October 10 at Clarke Township residence with Rev B Littlewood. burial in Orono Cemetery. pallbearers named.

William Graham dies in Orono at 78

William Graham of Orono aged 78 died suddenly on October 1 1946. He was born September 3 1868 in Tecumseth Township and spent life farming in Clarke Township before retiring to Orono. He leaves wife five sons one daughter and several siblings. Funeral was October 3 at Morris Funeral Chapel with interment at St Johns Cemetery Cookstown.

Happy Army Reunion at Armouries Celebrates Two Weddings

A joyous social evening at the local Armouries on Thursday October 10 featured two returning soldiers and their brides. Music by Howard Linton and Bill Found preceded a ribbon pull that released cash gifts for the couples, replacing traditional furniture presents. Refreshments followed the cheerful event.

Salvation Army Appeal Yields Strong Local Response

In Orono and surrounding country the Salvation Army home front appeal drew solid support. Collectors include Mrs Wini Glanville 200 dollars 25.45, Mrs W S Cobbledick 67.50, Evelyn Hall 49.50, J J Mellor 121.30, N Bradshaw 16.25, an anonymous donor 100.00, total 380.00 dollars.

Orono Hockey Club Plans Oshawa Practice On Ice

Orono players from the district assemble at the Armouries for an autumn meeting. They travel to Oshawa on October 24 for their first ice practice of the season and seek timbers from residents to reinforce a new reserve seat. A follow up meeting is set for October 21 with Oshawa hockey men to discuss tryouts for Junior and Midget teams.

Mrs Bruce Tennant Receives Two Miscellaneous Showers

Enid Middleton is honored with a miscellaneous shower on September 18 at Ruth Goodes home by the Orono Girls Softball Club. She receives gifts and the evening ends with a weiner roast. On September 19 workers from J Anderson Smith Co of Newcastle present a 32 piece dishes set and a salt and pepper set. A separate shower honors Mrs Bruce Tennant at Connie Mitchells home with readings, gifts, games, and lunch.
