Orono Boxing Back Fails as Fenwick Triumphs 7 1 in Baseball

Fenwick beat Orono 7 to 1 in Fenwick after noon. Ralph Kennedy and Charles Reid shared mound duties for Orono while Fenwick pitcher had nine strikeouts. Fenwick built leads on three early hits and an Orono error, with Wayne Miller and Michael Fagan among the Orono players who collected hits.

The Hi-Teens hold their second fall dance this weekend on October 17 at Town Hall with casual dress. DJ spins rock and roll, stroll, ballad, and Bunny Hop as the group shifts to a three week dance cadence. The next event is November 7, with no Hi-Teen dances until then.

Orono Park Board Sees Record Park Use and Revenue

The Orono Park Board met Tuesday to review summer activities noting much higher park use this year than 1958 by picnickers. Revenue rose due to greater attendance and admission increasing to fifty cents on Sundays. A flood-control study is planned with assistance sought, and a tree-planting plan is set to begin this fall into next year.

100 Honour Newly Weds Celebration in Orono

One hundred friends and neighbours gathered at the Goldfellow's Hall Orono to honor the marriage of Frances Quantrill and Janice Weal. Guests presented a TV chair a foot stool and a brass planter and dancing followed with live music.

Shewchuck Argue Nuptials at Yelverton United

Noreen Eliza beth Argue daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Scott Argue of Janetville and William Kenneth Shewchuk son of Mrs Victor Shewchuk of Orono and the late Mr Shewchuk were married at Yelverton United Church. Rev Samuel Snowden officiated with Mrs David Wilson at the organ and John Burn of Janetville as soloist. The bride wore chantilly lace and net cascading skirt with a beaded square edged lace bodice.

Wilton Grove takes Ontario Juvenile final crown

Wilton Grove Juveniles defeated Orono 17 to 4 in eight innings to win the Ontario Championship. Donnie Lycett and Donald Danchuk shared pitching for Orono, while Wilson Grove collected twelve hits to Orono's seven. Orono High School wins the tri school field meet with 198 points, defeating Millbrook and Blackstock. Gary McMackin leads junior boys, Artis McArthur and Glen Earle win medley events, and Orono plans a championship trip to Bronte for a Saturday game against Fenwick with a 1:00 pm kickoff.

Bowmanville man wounded in hunting accident

Gordon Sturrock, 29, of 210 Scugog Street Bowmanville, was shot Saturday morning during a pheasant hunt nine miles north of Bowmanville near Tyrone. Three buckshot pellets hit his neck and chin, two in the back. his condition was described as satisfactory. The incident occurred when a chase dog drove a cock bird from under a fence and an Oshawa man fired, with Sturrock in the line of fire about 40 feet away.

Durham Plowing Match Meets With Success

The Durham and Northumberland Plowing Match held on Wednesday, October 7th, 1959 at the Herman Schmid Farm, Newcastle, was judged by Winfred Timbers of Stouffville. Despite weather, events occurred with champions named in Horse Plowing, Tractor plows, Tractor Mounted Plows, and Junior divisions. Paul Macklin won both the Eaton trophy and Simpson Searon award for best beginner work. Local officials praised the organizing, land, and hospitality, while district director Howard Henry urged winners to compete in the International Match starting October 13 near Dundas.

Road upgrades expand traffic network in Northumberland Durham

In a major reconstruction program the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham upgrade five miles of coach road from Hampton to Taunton near Ontario. The work, to be finished next spring with permanent pavement on Road No 1, aims to create the system’s highest standard road.
