Orono Edges Dashwood To Tie Ontario Championship Series

Orono Baseball ties the Ontario Championship at one game each after a 2 1 victory over Dashwood. Keith West earned the win with seven hits allowed and six strikeouts while Guenthier of Dashwood matched seven hits and five strikeouts. The game featured a brawl between players and fans, sparking late drama as both sides left runners stranded. The deciding third game was postponed due to unsuitable field conditions.

Two Bowmanville Women Escape Injury In Highway Crash

Two Bowmanville women Miss D Purdon and her sister Margaret of 52 Division Street escaped serious injury Saturday afternoon when their car traveling to Lindsay was struck broadside by a Brown's Broad truck driven by Garnet Schrader of Lindsay at the brow of a hill on Highway 35 north of Pontypool. The car rolled over and was badly damaged.

Harness Racing Returns To Orono Saturday October 30

Harness racing returns to Orono with an expected crowd as 22 horses competed across four heats at Orono Raceway. Rain threatened attendance but the afternoon saw improving track conditions with Just Van and Dick Grattan sharing top honors in class 20. Bruester Boy dominated class 2.8 while Bob Norton and Vicky Jane Volo shared wins in race three. Harvest er Express claimed the fourth race. A fall meet is planned for October 30 by the Orono Turf Club.

Club Sh-Boom Opens With Most Successful Evening

Last Friday night in the Town Halls Club Sh-Boom held its first party with 58 members and about 85 more attendees. Bernice Lam and her group planned the event. Ken Neal with his fiddle and Mac Ransberry led square dancing. the Country Four quartet entertained. chairs and door chaperones aided the event. the next party is planned in about two weeks.

Joint October Meeting Of Womans Missionary Society And Association

The Women Missionary Society and Woman's Association held a joint meeting on Tuesday October 12 with Mrs E R Rainey presiding for the Association and Mrs Staples presiding for the Society. Minutes were read and approved and new business including purchasing plans and Downham Nursery pictures were discussed. A turkey dinner planned for November 10 and a study on India were highlighted along with prayers and a hymn.

Kendal Fife and Drum Dance and Draw Planned

The Kendal Fife and Drum Band will host a Dance and Draw on Friday October 22 at Kendal Orange Hall. Roche's Orchestra of Peterborough provides modern and old time music. A draw for an eight cubic foot Deep Freeze is announced, with tickets on sale now.

Newcastle Bantam Baseball Champions Honor Homecoming

The Newcastle Bantam team won the Ontario Championship by beating Dashwood Bantams 10 to 1 in a sudden death final. Players hailed from a local league with Orono Bowmanville Kendal Port Hope and Cobourg. Ted Lane pitched the complete game as Newcastle welcomed the champions with a town parade and planned banquet.

Shiloh Fellowship Circle Hosts October Meeting

The Shiloh group hosted a Fellowship Circle meeting on Tuesday October 5 with Mrs Morley Robinson presiding in the president's absence. Mr M H Staples of Orono gave a talk on Friendship and a Geo graphy match followed by refreshments and an accordion selection by Frank Westhouser. The next gathering is set for Tuesday October 19 at Kendal.

United Church Thanksgiving Service Featured By Decorated Harvest

The Orone United Church observed its church anniversary and Thanksgiving with a decorated altar of autumn fruits and vegetables. The Very Rev Dr W A Cameron delivered sermons and special music from the choir and soloists. The Beginners class carried baskets of fruit while ushers followed.

Fourteen Records Broken At Orono High School Field Day

Orono High School held a two day field meet with rain causing some events to be moved to Thursday. About one hundred students competed in roughly ninety events and fourteen records fell across junior, intermediate, and senior divisions. Notable marks include Eric Carleton and Bernice Lunn among others setting multiple records and topping points in their groups.

Death of Mina Fayne Korndyke Ends Remarkable Canadian Milking Record

Mina Fayne Korndyke a purebred Holstein owned by J. H. Jose and Sons Newcastle died at age twenty after completing fifteen official Record of Performance lactations totaling 211 328 pounds of milk and 17 937 pounds of fat. Her record ranks among Canada's top lifetime yields and influenced the Gladibrae herd through Mina’s progeny.

Clarke Township council met in Orono with Reeve A McKay and councilors. Delegations from Durham County District High School Board discussed Port Hope new high school and Bowmanville addition. Orono Orphans Hit Ice For Monday Workout

The Orono Orphans begin their season preparations at Port Hope this Monday evening. Coach Found expects at least forty players to vie for spots, with last year’s lineup forming the nucleus and new prospects ready to sign. Superior Propane sponsors the club and has outfitted them with new sweaters. He hopes local fans attend the first workout.
