Orono Horticultural Society Meets with Local Guests

The Orono Horticultural Society held a Tuesday evening meeting in the I.C.0.F. Hall with District Representative Mrs. Stephens and husband from Harwood visiting. She urged brightening town approaches with flowers and shrubs and noted Barnum House planting and Northumberland Historical Society projects. A Christmas meeting invitation for Oshawa Society was read.

Two Barns Burn Near Newtonville in Port Hope Fire

Fire destroyed two barns on Mr. Murray Payne's farm at Clarke south east of Newtonville, causing estimated losses exceeding 30000 dollars. A new barn was damaged, 2000 dollars worth of machinery and 4000 bushels of grain were burned, hay lost, and 72 Purebred Holsteins surrounded the scene but mostly escaped. Port Hope Fire Department fought the blaze.

Orono Wins Annual Tri School Field Meet

Orono High School took top honors at the Tri School Field Meet held Thursday at Blackstock. Cartwright and Millbrook placed second and third as Orono earned 22314 points to Millbrook 196 and Cartwright 9314. Individual winners included Gordon Simpson and Willis Barhaball of Orono in boys divisions and Peggy Hancock, Sharon Cannon, and Norma Earl among the girls champions.

Durham Federation Eyes New Egg Selling Plan

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture Directors met at the Dorrells Blackstock on October 5. They discuss an Ontario plan to sell eggs by teletype with top grade listings and published prices to curb distress sales. Delegates were named for the C F A meeting in Toronto November 6–8 and two delegates to the First Provincial Folk School at Geneva Park October 15–21.

Sunday Fire Destroys House Near Orono

A Sunday evening blaze totally destroyed a house on the fifth line west of Orono near Ontario Reforestry. Owned by Mrs. D Harness, the home belonged to Mr. and Mrs. M Adams with their family present. Efforts to contain the flames failed though downstairs furnishings were saved. upstairs contents perished as water had to be pumped from a distant stream. The Adams family moved in with relatives in Orono pending a new home on the Counties Road. Fire likely started in the chimney.

Durham Annual Farm Safety Rally in Orono Town Hall

The annual Durham County Farm Safety Rally is set for Friday November 20 at 8:00 p.m. in the Orono Town Hall. Guest speaker D O Gibb of the Ontario Department of Agriculture will discuss farm safety and the event will award prize money for 134 entered posters. All are welcome.

4-H Club Members Win At Guelph

Durham County 4-H members excel at the Ontario Agricultural College Inter-Club Competitions on Friday October 13 winning three events and placing in a fourth. Poultry team led by Larry Welsh and Garry Jeffery took first with 893, Grain Club led by Pat Knox and Harold Yellowlees topped thirty three teams with 928, and Senior Dairy Calf Club scored 923 to win. The Sheep Club added a fourth place showing for Durham with coaches named.

Orono Amateurs Plan Free For All Friday Night

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association schedules Friday October 20 as D day with a basketball game at 8 00 pm followed by the annual meeting and dancing in the Orono Municipal Building. A nominating committee will prepare officer slate prior to the meeting amid concerns over a $100 deficit and a small surplus.
