Dr. Geo W Miller Addresses Newcastle Lions Banquet

Dr George W Miller spoke to the Newcastle Lions and guests at a October 5 banquet at the Queen’s Hotel. He covered European and global health issues, noting war tension, Communist influence, and the Marshall Plan. Miller, a World Health Organization member, discussed global health efforts and the impact of Poland and Russia leaving the WHO.

Federation To Seek Authority On Farm Income Tax

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture details re adjustments to rural assessments for school purposes and possibilities of a local Folk School. They plan a Pot Luck Supper around November 30 and seek an expert on farm income tax to assist Durham farmers.

South African Families Acquire Gibson Farms Near Bowmanville

Alfred Armstrong and Solomon Hyman with their wives relocate from South Africa to Canada and purchase the Howard Gibson and McFarquhar farms near Bowmanville. They run 246 acres as a cooperative dairy fruit and poultry operation with Sally Hyman managing dairy and Albert Armstrong steering apple and poultry divisions. A federation meeting on farm income tax rules is planned in Nestleton with a Durham Federation executive delegation.

Immunization Drive Urges Protection Against Diseases

National Immunization Week highlights the need for early and adequate immunization against smallpox diphtheria and whooping cough. Infants should receive diphtheria and whooping cough vaccines at six months and smallpox at the same time. Clinics run weekly in Bowmanville Port Hope Cobourg and Campbellford with school programs in the meantime. Last year diphtheria killed 79 Canadians and whooping cough claimed 202 child lives. Immunization provides protection in over 80 percent of those immunized. parents should consult doctors or health unit clinics.

Autumn Wedding at St Saviour's Orono

Edna Leila Myles and James Bancroft Johnson wed at St Saviour's Anglican Church Orono with Rev. D R Dewdney officiating. The bride wore white satin with a train and veil, bouquet of red carnations and gypsophila, and reception in the parish hall. Anniversary Celebration Honors Malley Couple

Mr and Mrs Cecil Malley were surprised by a large celebration for their silver wedding in Onanige Hall Orono. The event featured a three tier cake flowers and a bell from the Malley wedding, with speeches gifts and musical numbers. A second presentation honored Grant Malley and his wife with a lamp and linen sheets as the community praised the couple.

Field Day at O C S Shifts to Wednesday Afternoon

Students competed in rapid events on October 4 at O C S Field Day. Names were pre-entered to speed the program and Mr Rutherford marked distances with lines, keeping a lively pace throughout. Wo man s Association Holds October Meeting

The Wo man s Association met at Mrs Isaac Winster s home with good attendance. President Mrs C G C Duncan led devotions on Thanksgiving and read from the twenty third psalm. Plans were made for a December 38th bazaar and awards noted for boys and girls in a school event.
