Oddfellows Service Club Acknowledges Support and Finances

The Oddfellows Service Club reports a substantial fund from dances and entertainments and thanks the public for donations. It notes every dollar spent on needed causes, with overseas letters praising the support and morale boost. The club plans to appeal again, citing a Sept. 30 1944 bank balance of $102.92 and net proceeds of $606.49 from dances, concerts, and donations.

Bill Moffat Wins Second Prize In The Provincial Poster Contest

Wartime meat ration changes boost value and groupings

Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces that meat loaves jellied meats bologna head cheese liver sausage and cretons frankais move to Group E on the ration chart for three pounds per coupon. Meat pies value doubled raising token to 16 ounces while several bone in cuts shift between groups with beef veal lamb changes from D to higher groups. Revised charts will be distributed and printed.

Veterans Land Act outlines farm purchase and loan details

The Veterans Land Act allows veterans to buy land livestock and equipment up to 6000 with 1200 for livestock. Loans at 3 14 percent require a 10 percent deposit plus establishment costs. A sample case shows a 4800 farm value with 1200 for livestock, 5000 total, and a 25 year repayment plan with two thirds loan and a government grant to the veteran.

Ontario Hog Marketing Vote Planned Across Provinces

Ontario hog producers will vote by ballot in November on a province wide Hog Marketing Scheme under the Farm Products Control Act. The Farm Products Control Board will oversee the process with county agricultural representatives, registering producers and scheduling meetings. Ballots accepted until December 8 1945 with two meetings in some counties.

Teen Age Girl Dies Of Gunshot Wounds

Mary Perfect age 14 of Bowmanville died in Bowmanville hospital after an accidental gunshot wound to the leg. Her brother Bert 19 and a friend had returned from duck hunting when the shotgun discharged in the kitchen. A tourniquet was applied.

Girl Dies After Hospital Admission

The girl was rushed to the hospital and died soon after admission. Coroner Dr. Charles Austin ruled the death accidental and stated an inquest would not be necessary.

Durham County Federation of Agriculture Resolution on Labour Strikes

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture expresses strong disapproval of organized labour aims and methods in recent strikes. It notes the growing price gap between farmer receipts and consumer costs, arguing this harms farmers as employers and citizens and shows indifference to food growers and democratic institutions.

Prominent Orono Merchant John J. Cornish Passes

John J. Cornish Orono merchant died after an auto crash in Newcastle on October 1. He was treated at Oshawa General Hospital but died October 16 due to shock and blood loss. Remains were at Major Fred Lycett's home with services planned at Park Street United Church and graveside by Orono Masonic Lodge.

103 Holsteins Shown At Championship Show

John Cruickshank of Hampton won the Senior Male Championship with Glenafton Pilot at the fourth annual Regional Championship Holstein show in Warkworth on October 11. A. Muir. & Sons of Courtice placed in several divisions. 103 cows from eight Central Ontario counties were shown.
