Harvest Thanksgiving Services at St Saviour’s Church

Livestock show results announced with prize winners in numerous classes led by T. R. Hall and Heber Down. Orono youths turn out for pract ice at Armouries adults urged to watch

Fifty boys gathered Tuesday evening at the Armouries for volleyball basketball and floor hockey practice. Perce Lunn coaches defense and discipline with an accident noted Bill Found fractured a collar bone but expected to recover. Mothers and Fathers invited to observe Thursday's session as the Honorary President Orme Gamsby praises sport's benefits for health, teamwork, character, and community pride.

Womans Association Meeting at Park St Church

The Womans Association of Park St Church met in the Sunday School room for October. Mrs. M J Tamblyn led devotion and spoke on Thanksgiving in Canada. Miss Myrtle Tamblyn read The Angelus. A Fall canvas for funds was ordered and a clothing gift of 25 to the National Drive was approved. Mrs H Rowe read The Thanksgiving Sermon. The article also extols sports as vital to community life and youth development.

Urgent Dominion Clothing Drive For Orono District

A Dominion wide appeal sponsored by Canadian United Allied Fund for UNRRA asks for used clothing from Oct 1 to Oct 20. Chair C W Rolph leads a local committee collecting men women boys girls children and infant garments in complete outfits with pairs intact and cleanly donated via the Sunday School room at United Church Orono. The drive covers Orono and surrounding areas including Leskard and Kirby with parcels gathered and packed by the committee.

Three Brood Sows Birth Fifty Pigs on Thanksgiving Day

Mr. R. H. Hollingsworth of Clarke County reports three of his brood sows farrowed fifty piglets in twelve hours on Thanksgiving Monday. Two litters yielded 18 pigs each and a third 14, totaling 50. All piglets are thriving, boosting pork exports to Britain.

Presentation Made To Mr. and Mrs. Hancock

A social evening was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hancock on October 2 as neighbors gathered to wish the newly married couple happiness. A chair and a vase were presented, followed by lunch and dancing.

Y P U Meeting Opens With Games And Treats

The Park St. Y P U held its opening meeting on Thursday evening with Alma Emprey leading a short worship, Nellie Wright reading Scripture, and Anna Staples in charge of games and contests. A watermelon treat followed before a friendship circle and mizpah benediction. A large turnout attended, with hopes for a bigger crowd next Thursday.

Clarke Township Objective 200000 In 9th Victory Loan

The Orono Red Cross branch opened its Orange Hall work room after recess. Mrs. Armstrong urged continued women volunteers as war relief worsens. Clothing and quilts are badly needed. yarn and materials await helpers. Christmas Bazaar canceled. $200 was voted to the Canadian Red Cross.

South Durham Calf Club shows strong showing at Orono fair

At Orono Fair on September 22 nine youths competed in the South Durham Dairy Calf Club Achievement Day. Standings in Holstein and Jersey classes are listed, with prizes split between the Durham Central Agricultural Society and provincial departments. Two club members will represent Durham County at Guelph in October, under coaching from E A Summers. Tom Lewis returns from four years away, planning hospital surgery after military service. Victory Loan objectives for Clarke Township and surrounding areas are set, with Durham County total at 2 050 000 for the Ninth Loan and context on prior loans.

Fine Quality Black And White Show At Orono

The Durham County Black and White Show at Orono Fair drew 104 Holsteins from 14 breeders. Judge Fred H. Hubbs praised the two-year-old in milk class as the best he has seen at a county show. Grand Champion female was Glenariff Betty General shown by H. Bruce Tink. Reserve Grand Champion was Cedar Dale Montvic Ella. Male Grand Champion went to Glenafton Pilot shown by John Cruickshank. Reserve Grand Champion male was Strathmore Vale Sir Heilo Zozo owned by A. Muir & Sons. Muir & Sons collected many firsts, including thirteen firsts overall, with multiple herd and sire awards.
