Water Plans Nearing Completion In Orono

Final plans for the Orono water system drafted by Marshall Macklin Monaghan. Engineers conduct final checks. soil tests to determine site for 150000 gallon stand pipes. A Friday meeting with engineers Ontario Water Resources Commission and Orono Police Trustees will decide land purchases and tendering for well and mains development.

Orono Couples Club Hosts Autumn Corn Roast

The Orono Couples Club held its annual corn roast at Newcastle Beach on Saturday evening October 10. Seven couples attended despite cool winds as a high bank sheltered the crowd and a bonfire roasted corn. Hot dogs coffee and marshmallows were served. Don and Jeanne Staples won the scavenger hunt prize a box of chocolates.

Province Approves Clarke Township Centennial Plan

Port Hope and Clarke Township grants under the Centennial Grants Programme have been approved by Ontario and sent to Ottawa for Centennial Commission approval. Port Hope plans a Fire Hall project costing about 78 000 with funding split 61 776 Port Hope, 8 112 Ontario, 8 112 Canada. Clarke plans park lands at about 11 847 with funding 3 949 Clarke, 3 949 Ontario, 3 949 Canada.

Orono Athletic Posts $490 Year End Surplus

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held its annual meeting in the Orono Municipal Building with twelve attendees. Treasurer Dean West outlined a $490 balance and a $30 expected refund from leagues. Reappointed officers included President Robert Hazelden, Vice-President Douglas Allen, and Secretary Horace Best.

Canadian Club speaker and township by law changes detailed

Dr J J Green of Litton Systems Canada addressed Bowmanville and local council outlined a by law setting road standards for subdivisions. The plan requires 66 foot minimum width, drainage, cross sections and soil removal, with pit run gravel surface plus dust lay and a $2000 per mile bond. Council also discussed municipal parking rules near Mosport and approval of a Vocational Wing at Courtice High School. Tenders for Newtonville sidewalk were reviewed and revisions to the restricted area by law were authorized for planning board consideration.

Jack Reid Injured in Mohawk Raceway Three Horse Spill

Harness driver Jack Reid was injured in a three horse spill at Mohawk Raceway last Friday evening. Reid, a Milton General Hospital patient, suffered a broken nose and facial cuts after surgery earlier this week. Fellow driver Hugh Stewart Jr. sustained a fractured left arm and a dislocated shoulder.

Death of Robert H Ard in Bowmanville Rites Held

Robert H Ard died at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville on October 6 1964 aged 76. He was born in Clarke township and married Elsie Burgess in 1914. He farmed and threshing in Clarke until ill health led him to Kibby. Survived by wife Jane Elsie Burgess two daughters Gladys and Kathleen, two sons James, one sister and ten grandchildren. Funeral from Barlow Orono October 8 conducted by Rev Basil Long. Interment Orono Cemetery. pallbearers listed.

Fires Struck Two Crono Homes During Fire Prevention Week

During Fire Prevention Week October 4 to 10 Crono recorded two fires. The first occurred at Partner's Plumbing and Heating on Monday. The second started in the Mill Street home of Mr and Mrs Cecil Tebble on Friday afternoon due to faulty flue pipes from a coal and wood stove. Fire smouldered inside the wall before detection. Firefighters cut a section of exterior wall to reach and extinguish the blaze.
