Durham County Co op medical service cuts premiums and expands reach
The Durham County Co operative Medical Services board announced a 20 percent premium reduction for Surgical and Major Medical contracts and a $50 deductible increase for Extended Medical plans. Membership grew 10 percent to 1140, with total premiums rising from 3400 in 1947 to 38898 in 1964. Board also noted efficient costs, a $21,385 net saving, and plans to place a 1358 reserve in general funds. Directors elected Ray Stewart Gerald Shackleton Cliff Maclroy Edgar Buttars. Rev Melville Buttars spoke on learning from the sick and the value of love.

Clarke Township declines loan funds for 1965 road plan
Clarke Township council discussed a $62 925 loan fund offer but declined due to budget strain. The village plans a $267 530 road project for 1955 and will complete that first. Orono Police Trustees may use part of the funds for a water extension costing 4 000 to 5 000.

Vanier warns Trent students education must expand
Governor General George Vanier opened Trent University at Peterborough urging a broad education beyond schooling. He warned the world will not accept the drop-out or over-specialized, stressing education as an ongoing cultivation of an inquiring mind. The nascent campus sits on a 1400 acre site with Nassau five miles away, construction valued at 70 million dollars expected to finish in 1966. Thomas Symons is university president and 105 students are enrolled this year including Doug Martin from Clarke High School.

Newcastle Woman Jane Cowan Dies at 82 in Oshawa
Jane Theresa Cowan of Newcastle died Sunday in Oshawa General Hospital in her 83rd year after eight years of poor health. She was born in Newcastle in 1882 and lived there most of her life, later at Hillsdale Manor Oshawa. Survived by four sons Richard Toronto Frederick Whitby James Oshawa Samuel Cobourg and daughter Marjorie Dickinson Newcastle. Funeral Tuesday October 20 at 2 pm with interment Bond Head Cemetery Newcastle.
