Orono Chamber Considers Entrance Signs and Local Upgrades

The Orono Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting with 25 attendees. They discussed erecting entrance signs, UNICEF fundraising, and fire protection for the township, plus plans to petition Clarke Township and study school-area changes.

Red Cross Blood Donors Clinic Urges Community Pledges

Community urged to pledge blood at the Red Cross clinic to support hospitals. Event at Lions Centre Bowmanville on November 4 from 2 to 4 30 pm and 6 30 to 9 pm. Mission Band Attendance Surges at WMS Auxiliary Meeting

October meeting of the After noon Auxiliary of the WMS opened with a poem. Over forty children attended both sessions led by Mrs McLaren and Mrs Challis. Miss Walbridge from Angola spoke to Oshawa Presbytery. Upcoming events include a November Thankoffering, a bale of food and clothing for Fred Victor Mission, and an October 29 rally at Ebenezer.

Orono Guides Plan Jubilee Tulip Planting Across Canada

A shipment of Golden Harvest tulips from Holland arrives in Canada to mark the Guiding Golden Jubilee in 1960. Orono will plant bulbs at the United Church as thanks to the community, with Girl Guides and Brownies planting under leaders’ supervision. The project spans coast to coast and extends to Yukon, Montreal, Vancouver, and Newfoundland communities.

Mary Patton Dies in Whitby Highway 401 Crash

Mrs. Mary Patton formerly of Orono perished in a two car collision on Highway 401 west of Henry Street overpass Whitby. The other victim was Mrs Fager of Whitby. Patton's husband Percy David Patton and their sons Manson Crone Roy Carman and Ross survive.

Orono and Wilton Grove Teens Open Final Playdowns

The Orono Juvenile Baseball Club lost 7 to 1 to Wilton Grove in the first game of the Ontario playdowns final series. Don Danchuk had the lone Orono hit as Terry Carleton started on the mound with relief from Donnie Lycett. Wilton Grove benefited from unearned runs in the first and more scoring in the third, fifth, and sixth.

Orono Amateur Athletic Association Plans Winter Activities

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held a Tuesday meeting chaired by Jim Gamsby with about fifteen members present. Treasurer Donald Staples reported a $36.00 balance plus near $300.00 from the Chamber of Commerce and $65.00 from the Durham District High School Board, aiming to start the fall season with around $3400.00. A banquet to support rink operations is set for Thursday, November 26, with committee members named. Insurance for minor hockey players was approved, birth certificates and $1 insurance fee to be collected. A letter of thanks was sent to Partner Plumbing and Heating for a $25.00 gift.

Girl Guides Hold Regular Meeting With Patrols and Fund Plan

The Tuesday gathering started at 7 30 with inspection and 25 guides present. Mrs Arnott taught older girls telegrams while new recruits learned the Guide Promise and laws. The Captain set each girl a 1 50 goal, some choosing babysitting to earn it.

C.G.I.T. Hosts Tea and Sale of Chinese Articles

The C.G.I.T. of Orono United Church held a successful Saturday sale in the Sunday School room featuring Chinese articles and handmade aprons. Mrs. A. A. Drummond opened the event, with items sent from Hong Kong refugees. Volunteers served tea and sandwiches as guests browsed blue white tables and supported the WMS auxiliary.
