Insurance Federation Lists Points To Prevent Farm Fire

The All Canada Insurance Federation warns fire can ruin a farmer financially in hours. It lists ten safety steps including lightning protection checks, grounding wire fences, grounding antennas, regular wiring checks, safe storage of fuels, annual inspections of stoves and chimneys, metal fire screens, and safe operation of portable heaters.

Clarke Union Home and School Club Meeting Recap

The Clarke Union Home and School Club met Friday October 9 with a business session followed by entertainment. Betty Chatterton sang solo with Arlene Rainey on piano, Roy Cornish of Port Perry presented pictures. Lunch and social hour concluded the event.

Impressive Thanksgiving Service At United Church

Sunday morning's service at the United Church featured a Thanksgiving theme with two large cornucopias of fruit and vegetables as decorations. Rev. John Kitchen delivered the sermon and was joined by Rev. Cecil T. Allin of the USA, a former Orono boy, as the choir led by Mrs. W K E Workman performed the Te Deum and Spirit of God aided by Glen Allin. Primary children offered baskets of fruit at the altar.

Bugle Band To Open Carnival This Friday Night

The Orono Arena hosts a full carnival Friday night sponsored by the Orono Orphans Hockey Club to raise funds. The program includes games and a prize draw with booths opening at 8 00 p m. A parade led by the Bugle Band from the Boys Training School will march into town to inaugurate the event.

UNICEF debate at UN prolongs children’s aid worldwide

A UN General Assembly debate hails UNICEF as the showpiece and votes to extend its mandate indefinitely. Canada and other nations back the fund, which since 1946 has aided 60 million children in 84 countries with milk programs, vaccines, TB control, and penicillin. US contributions near $100 million. UNICEF matches country donations. The discussion features many women speakers and ends on a note of optimism about easing tensions and potential four and five power talks.

New Road Engineer Appointed By Twin Counties

George L. Totten of Orangeville, 27, named Counties Road Superintendent by Northumberland and Durham Counties Council in Cobourg. He replaces Jack Jordan who resigned after requesting a raise. Totten will earn 4600 per year for six months, then 4800, starting within two weeks. Totten, a Saskatchewan native and University of Saskatchewan graduate, beat two other finalists from Trenton and a construction firm after a lengthy appraisal of 14 applicants.

Kendal Family Weekend Visit and Local Church Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Paul Mercer and family visited Kendal with Fred Warren’s family then returned to Guelph. Mrs Anderson and Freddie rode to Toronto to visit Mr Everett Thorne who recently had an operation and is not fully recovered. Orono High School Track and Field Meet Results

Orono High School held its annual Track and Field Day at the Orono Exhibition grounds with juniors, intermediates and seniors competing in events such as discus, javelin, broad and high jumps and races. Blues beat Whites as records fell and a total of about 150 events were completed with strong sportsmanship. top individual scorers included Bernice Lunn, Paul Rutherford, Jackie Bailey, and Marie Lewis.

Canadian Plow King Crowned At Cobourg Show

About 100000 attendees watched Jim Eeeles of Brampton win the world plowing title at Cobourg during the 40th annual international plowing match. Timbers of Stouffville finished third after a field of 20 competitors from 11 nations. The event crowned Canada's Eccles as the world winner and Timbers as Canadian champion with a British judge officiating the alternate placements.
