Corner Stone Ceremony at Orono United Church

Autumn weather marked the corner stone laying for the new Orono United Church on October 4. Rev. A. E. Eustace opened with prayer as Rev. M. C. Fisher of Brooklin named the church Crone United Church.

Holstein Show At Lindsay Draws 83 Head From Five Counties

Holstein breeders from Victoria Peterborough Durham York and Haliburton exhibited 83 milking cows at Lindsay. Judge D B Dunton Brampton named senior grand and reserve senior grand champions in the milking aged cow class amid good weather and a large ringside.

Successful Reunion Of Midland Regiment Veterans

More than 100 veterans gathered at the cenotaph on September third for a remembrance service led by Rev. Henderson of Bowmanville. The reunion followed at the Armouries with officers elected for the coming year and many letters from absent members. Eleven years after the war many recalled campaigns in Italy Sicily France Holland and Germany including 52 who served in Hong Kong.

Afternoon Auxiliary Marks Sixty Fifth Anniversary Meeting

The Afternoon Auxiliary of the United Church Women’s Missionary Society held a special autumn Thank Offering meeting at the Masonic Hall to celebrate its sixty fifth anniversary. Mrs. M H Staples led worship, with guests from Kirby, Kendal and Newcastle. Miss Moore spoke on China missions, detailing hospitals, schools, and the Church of Christ in China amid social changes. An Evening Auxiliary lunch followed and was well received.

Solina Wins Darlington Clarke League Playoffs Title

Solina champions of Clarke Darlington Football League finished fourth in the regular schedule and defeated Courtice 2 0 in the semi final. They then beat Maple Grove in the finals to capture the Breslin Trophy, the league’s new playoff prize, after Courtice had dominated previous years. The league includes teams from Orono Tyrone Enniskillen Zion Hampton Maple Grove Courtice and Solina.

Dance To Be Held In Orone This Friday Night

The Orone Intermediate Softball Club hosts a dance at Township Hall Oxone this Friday October 6. Roy Forrester's band will provide music and admission is 50c per person. Proceeds help cover playoff expenses. support the team.

St Saviour’s Harvest Festival Services Held

St Saviour's Church was beauti fully decorated for Harvest Thanksgiving last Sunday. Flowers foliage vegetables corn and grain graced windows and chancel. Rev Earl Sigsten of St John's Bowmanville attended Evensong and Mrs E C Workman Bowmanville led the organ due to illness. Messrs W H Mitchell and Colin Taylor joined the choir for a vocal duet.

Kendal L O L Draw And Dance Draw Huge Success

The Orange Lodge sponsored draw and dance in Kendal Orange Hall drew a capacity crowd on Friday September 29 with Challice Orchestra Millbrook providing music. Six children drew prizes including a radio to Milton Dunbar and a grocery voucher to Laura Burgess. proceeds support hall improvements and future dances with the same orchestra.

Kendal Wins Durham Hardball Championship

Kendal defeated Bethany 7 to 4 at Newcastle ballpark to claim the Intermediate Baseball title. The final game featured Kendal’s battery Kenny catcher Quantrill and C Cornish pitchers with Quantrill relieved by Cornish in the fifth inning as a large crowd looked on.

Jury awards $4100 in fatal bicycle accident suit

A jury in the Supreme Court awarded Mrs. J. L. Cryderman administratrix $4,100 plus costs in a $50,000 damage action against Ernest West of Orono for the death of her husband in a bicycle accident near Bowmanville. West nursed 60 percent fault. Gillespie of Hartford was dismissed with costs against the plaintiff.

Township road work and bridge costs dominate council session

Clark Township Council met October 8 with all members present. Roads and the 1950 tax levy were discussed, include a request to close a road between Lots 34 and 35 on Concession 5. The council authorized a road engineer to advise on the closure. They approved obtaining another bulldozer for Hale Simapleton road and replacing the old grader, estimated at about 6 300 dollars. Millson bridge costs were debated with estimates around 5 500 dollars plus possible 1 000 for fill and 902 for steel. The levy for 1950 totals 100 878 dollars, up 8 000 from 1949. Dog taxes will rise about 4 00 over 1949. Sheep killings show a deficit of around 1 800 with many in the south giving up sheep farming. The meeting adjourned.

Complaints on Speeding Motorbikes Prompt Village Meeting

The Orone Police Trustees met on September 27 with full members and Fire Chief F. C. Cooper present. They discussed speeding motorbikes on Main Street and planned to involve the Provincial Police. The meeting focused on the Volunteer Fire Brigade, noting two new members, and considered a waiter tank near Millson's on Cobb Hill and a village fire alarm system. Pay rates for the fire department were set: Fire Chief $25 annual, brigade attendance $15 per fire, brigade practice $10.

Durham Farmers Urge Use Place Name Signs

Durham Federation of Agriculture members urged closer liaison with Farm Forum groups at a September 25 meeting in Bowmanville. They proposed a part time Forum Secretary, a paid mileage system, and a Farm Forum distribution channel. Walter Reynolds was named chair of a committee to launch place name signs on farm gates for better direction.
