United Church WM LS Celebrates 60th Anniversary

The Woman's Missionary Society of Park St United Church marked its sixtieth anniversary with morning and evening services featuring guest speaker Mrs. Roger Self of Toronto. She urged ongoing missionary work and unity, citing Home Missions and foreign stations. A TuesdayThank Offering followed with talks on the society’s history and founders, including Miss Elizabeth Barrett.

Orono Band Plans Mortgage Payoff And Yearly Elections

The Orono Band met in council chamber to review finances showing receipts 679.93 expenses 172.70 leaving 507.23 and voting to pay off mortgage and interest 472.50. Officers elected include A J Tamblyn president and M J Tamblyn band master. a town hall dance is planned for October 26 with recruitment urged.

Orono Hydro Commission Plans Year‑End Transition

The Orono Hydro Commission met September 26 with all members. C. T. Miller was named to attend the Eastern Ontario Hydro convention in Brockville on October 4. Bills were approved totaling 403.13 and the bank balance stood at 1,846.65. Preparations to take over Bowmanville Public Utilities office work at year’s start were authorized with Miller to buy equipment and the secretary to request an auditor from D. I. Nattress.

Orono Amateur Athletic News Sets Youth Events

At a recent meeting Mr. McGinnis was added to the officials helming youth activities. A November dance was planned with Cornish and Tyrrell in charge. Forty boys queued October 2 to be placed on teams as mentors West and Winters organized games before hockey starts. Club meets from October 9 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ages 12 and under 7, 12 to 15 at 7 45, 15 and over at 8 30. Parents urged punctuality and preparation for exercises.

Seaside robbery suspects captured after high speed chase

Chief Constable Sidney Venton of Bowmanville and Gordon Broughton pursued a fast eastbound auto on No 2 Highway near Bowmanville after a near collision. Three men, Walter Misko, John Liddle, and Victor Wazny, yielded after a gunfight during a 75 mile chase and faced armed robbery charges with $12000 alleged loss. They were remanded to Oct 9.

The Orono Police Trustees met on September 26 with all members present. They approved $140 in funds for fill on the west side of Tannery Bridge and set the annual meeting and nominating event for police trustees on the Friday evening before the last Monday in November each year.

John Cornish Seriously Injured In Auto Crash

A serious accident occurred at the west end of Newcastle village when local grocer J. J. Cornish and his wife stopped after tire trouble. Cornish was injured with multiple leg fractures and shock. he was taken to Oshawa General Hospital. Blood transfusions were needed Tuesday, with many district donors ready to help.
