Six Councils Back Large Darlington Millbrook School Plan

Six municipal councils endorsed a plan to build a 506 to 700 pupil school in Darlington and a 150 pupil high school in Millbrook after meetings led by Bowmanville mayor. The division of assets and the need for a staged building program were discussed as Hope and Clarke Townships withheld decisions.

Hi-Teens Open With Dress Up Dance This Saturday

Hi-Teens executives announce a Dress Up Dance this Saturday October 3 at John Ford's apartment. Tickets fifty cents. The Four Teens from Uxbridge will perform. Door prize and three prize dances planned. Paul Minacola and his orchestra may play at the New Year’s Eve Formal.

C.G.LT Tea Event With Oct 3 Apron Sale

The C G LT group held its first meeting of the season and announced a tea plus sale of homemade aprons and Chinese articles on Saturday October 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Sunday School room at Oreno United Church. Officers were elected: President Joan Ransberry, Secretary Donna Couvier, Treasurer Carol Wagg, Reporter Lynn Bailey. A gift was given to Doreen Alldred in honor of her upcoming marriage. lunch was served to close the meeting.

Clarke Considers Withdrawing From Durham District High School Area

Clarke moves to withdraw from the Durham District High School Area after a petition request. The council passes a resolution to study the move and form an evaluating committee. Petitions will be circulated across Clarke Township to gauge overall opinion.

Durham Board Proposes Two New Schools

The Durham District High School Board proposed building two new schools after studying results from the Bowmanville council meeting. A 150 pupil school would be in Millbrook and a 500 pupil school in Darlington, awaiting municipal approval to begin work.

Orono Badminton Club Forming For Fall Winter Season

Four teens showed interest in forming the Orono Badminton Club at the Orono Community Building. The club will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings with fees of 1.50 for students and 2.50 for adults, non members 25 cents nightly. Officers include Douglas J Lycett president Nancy Wallace secretary Elva Reid treasurer and Carman Cornish to arrange tournaments. A news net and birds will be purchased and the club plans several tournaments and will seek municipal building rent from Trustees.

Ontario Water Resources to test drill Orono for village water

Clarke Township council approved an Ontario Water Resources Commission plan to test drill in Orono for municipal water supply. The project allows up to 7500 to be spent with 3000 needing township approval and the village to cover the drilling costs. Drilling is expected within two weeks.

Orono Trustees Return Petition For Clear Definition

Orono Village Trustees met Monday evening with all members present to review finances. They estimated year end balance around 580 dollars but the chairman doubted finishing the year with that amount.

Newcastle to open bowling alleys in Community Hall basement

Round About Us notes Newcastle hopes to open four new bowling alleys in the basement of the Community Hall within three weeks. Bowmenville also gets a new location north of Highway 401 as Oshawa boasts ultra modern alleys opened last week. Intermediates hockey prospects appear dim with Port Hope and Bowmanville out of the circuit, while juniors may form teams in Port Hope Bowmanville and Cobourg.

Juv Start Play In OBA Finals At Orono Park

The Orono Juvenile Baseball Club opens the Ontario final series this Saturday at 4:00 PM at Orono Park facing a western Ontario team. The winner becomes Ontario Juvenile Champions. Local support urged.

Berna Haase and Walter Stapleton Wed in Orono Church

Berna Gail Haase and Walter Milton Stapleton were married September 26 at Orono United Church. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Haase, wore ivory satin organza with a pearl head dress and white and red rose bouquet. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stapleton. The Rev Basil Long officiated with music by Marilyn Quantrill. Attendants included Gall Halliday as bridesmaid and Harold Moffat as best man. The couple plan to reside in Orono after a reception at the Acres.
