Clarke Recreation Area acquired in Clarke Township Ontario

Alex Carruthers announces the Department of Lands and Forests will take 814 acres in Clarke Township as a Recreation Area. The Kendal or Clarke site includes Kendal Village dam and mill pond, hills to the west, and supports timber, farming, swimming, trout fishing, bogganing, skiing, picnicking and nature viewing with parking and services planned. Credit is given to Ganaraska Conservation Authority, Reeve Roy Foster, and Authority member Elmer Scott for vision and development collaboration.

Opening of Orono Post Office Draws Officials and Public

Last Friday the Orono Post Office on Church and Centre Streets opened with a formal ceremony. The crowd heard welcomes from Ralph S. Fonbery and local dignitaries including Merrill Van Camp Roy Foster and E B Woodyard. Russell C. Honey cut the ribbon as the Junior Band played God Save the Queen. A reception followed at the Oddfellow’s Hall.

Ontario Liberals Plan Open Forum For Agriculture

Ontario Liberal Leader Robert Nixon told about 200 at a Port Hope meeting that farmers and other groups should air grievances. He proposed a permanent all party committee on agriculture with a chair, staff, and public hearings to act quickly on farm issues. He criticized the Robarts government on food and housing.

Orono Horticultural Society News and Scotland Trip Recap

The Orono Horticultural Society held its first fall meeting September 28 in the United Church Hall. Highlights include a November Membership dinner, more tulip bulbs for the beds, and funds for Junior Gardeners prizes and their Christmas show. Miss Catherine Stewart showed Scotland and England photos from her June trip, and a summary of their itinerary in Devon, Scotland, and London.

Pine Ridge centennial festival hosts 600 guests in opening night

Pine Ridge training school for boys welcomed about 600 guests for its three day centennial festival opening. Douglas Penfold stood in for Minister Allan Grossman as Kingsway College Band and Cobourg’s Brookside choir performed selections from the Sound of Music and This Land Is Our Land. The event featured a parade from Central School to Pine Ridge with Ontario Regiment guard, a 17 gun salute from Sherman tanks, and displays by 140 students in a tent village and gym. Skydiving and aerobatic shows, five bonfires, and The Burning of the Elms were highlights.

Clarke High School announces the Clarke Players presenting a trio of one act plays Friday and Saturday October sixth and seventh. The Pen of My Aunt follows an aristocratic French Madame and her servant outwitting a German soldier aiding an allied fighter. Brothers in Arms features an American husband and wife encountering rustic Canadian North life. Flourentine Tragedy shows a young prince aiding a dissatisfied wife as danger rises.
