Clarke Township Council Acts on Roads and Schools

Clarke Township Council met Tuesday October 3 to hear delegations and pass by laws. They rescinded a former by law to set up a Planning Board with seven appointees and resolved road, tax write offs, and a $108,700 project including storm sewers and paving. They borrowed 279,507 for Kirby Centennial School and issued a 50,695 debenture for Kendall Public School.

Carruthers Defines Education Policy for Durham County

Alex Carruthers, Progressive Conservative candidate, spoke to the local executive at Blackstock on Friday outlining party aims on education grants. He cited county grant shares by township, argued 80 percent provincial funding would bias rural Durham, and warned of higher taxes to cover costs. Accounts passed included general 18,326.54, Welfare 1,292.31, road 11,272.00, and Orono Police Trustees 2,043.49.

Clarke High students stage trio of one act plays

Clarke Players presented three one act plays at Newcastle Community Hall over the weekend drawing good crowds. Productions included The Pen of my Aunt directed by J Bennett with Corrie van der Werf and others, Brothers In Arms directed by Marjorie Murphy featuring Stephen Gould and Georgina Simpson, and A Florentine Tragedy directed by Ken Stubington with Frances Hoar and Keith Allin.

Orono civic notes on debt payoff and elections

The Orono Athletic Association reports $1000 paid toward artificial ice costs, leaving $4500 remaining to clear the rink installation debt. Hockey registrations set for October 27 at the arena with $6 fees including insurance. The Orono Chamber of Commerce hosts a three candidate night at 8:30 in the Oddfellow’s Hall featuring Alex Carruthers, E R Levekin, and Douglas Moffat to discuss policy for small business, followed by a Q&A. chamber meetings run from 7:15 to 8:30.

Wedding Guests Share Shower Memories In Port Hope Area

The couple received two community showers before their nuptials, one in Newtonville and one in Newcastle, as the bride wore a green floral dress with a yellow petal hat. Miss Jeanette Tozer hosted a bridesmaid family shower at her lawn, and The File in Port Hope hosted two presentations at Miss Helen Newton's home and at an office.

Curling interest sought by Orono Athletic Association

The Orono Athletic Association seeks interest to start curling in Orono. They will assist promotion but not sponsor the sport and need a volunteer to lead and organize participants. Ice time and schedule will be allocated soon. For details contact President S Mather.
