Miss Marilyn Rundle Choosen Beauty Queen of Darlington

The Newcastle community dance on November 20 sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Nichols crowned Miss Marilyn Rundle as Miss Darlington Township of 1947. Nine teen-year-old Rundle, from Courtice, won after the field of single Darlington Township contestants was narrowed by a panel of judges. The event drew over 900 guests from Oshawa to Bowmanville, featured Cornhuskers music, and included a balloon contest won by Miss Inez Cameron of Zion.

Clarke School Area elects new board after meeting

Clarke Township School Area held a pot luck supper and business meeting at the Masonic Hall Orono. Trustees Russell Osborne Wes Wood Geo Morton Brooks Cowan discussed finances and improvements as five new trustees were elected by acclamation to join existing members Wes Wood Geo Morton Russell Osborne Reg Elliott and Chas Alldread.

Nylon talk highlights Kingston role at Orone Women’s Institute

The November meeting of the Orone Women’s Institute featured Mrs. F Tamblyn on agriculture and Canadian industries and Mrs. N I Hall detailing nylon. Kingston Ontario emerged as a major nylon research site due to cold water access. nylon production relies on coal water and air. The talk noted future nylon products and a Toronto convention summary by Mrs. O W Rolph. The December meeting is planned for December 19 with Mrs. J Richardson.

Orono Scouts Entertained by Toronto Troop

Orono Scout Troop was entertained at a Father and Son Banquet by the 165th Scout Group, Toronto, at St Nicholas Church Kingston Road. Three carloads of men and boys attended a camp reunion with demonstrations of Cub and Scout work and a challenge from Toronto for further study.

Northumberland Durham Health October Report Highlights Immunizations

October health report shows 85 communicable disease cases with 67 mumps and 10 chicken pox. Immunization clinics held 105 producing 489 diphtheria vaccinations and 75 diphtheria with whooping cough. 17 child health conferences hosted 185 infants and preschoolers. A Bowmansville crippled-children clinic examined 41. Health unit staff conducted school examinations, nurse inspections, and sanitary surveys across 84 schools. Traveling chest clinics served Bowmanville Campbellford Hastings with 187 attendees. Public health nurses performed 86 home visits for TB. two patients admitted to sanatorium after mass x ray findings.

Mrs N Little visited Toronto with Kendal friends for the Royal Winter Fair on Burleys bus. Mr and Mrs Reynolds and Peter visited Caesaria. H K Reynolds and Boyd families attend the fair. A W I Convention address by Col C A Krug of Ottawa praised the Royal York Roof Garden talk Your Country and Mine. He recalled grandparents from Europe settling in Western Ontario and language groups from Wales Highlands Scotland and Yorkshire reacting to language.

Clarke Township Nomination Opens Key Races in Orono

At the Clarke Township nomination meeting in Orono on Saturday, November 22, reeve E. R. Woodyard was acclaimed. Deputy Reeve Charles M. Jones faces James H. Lowery for the post, while four candidates contend for three council seats: Art McKay James T. Brown John Henry Davey and G Wilfred Hawke. Woodyard spoke on road work taxes and snow plowing costs and noted new equipment arriving.

Clarke Union Home and School Club Holds November Meeting

The Clarke Union Home and School Club gathered November 14 with many present. Cecil Carveth presented films on school buses, road conditions, and forestry fires while the Allin Quartette performed. Roy Scott thanked participants and the meeting closed with God Save the King and lunch.
