Winter Sports Plans For Orono Youths In Local Arena

The Orono Athletic Association outlines a winter program with public skating hockey and figure skating. A midget hockey team will join the O.M.H.A. league and a Newcastle juvenile team may enter. Junior activities target younger boys, with schoolchildren skating Tue Thu and Sat. Season tickets cost 2.00 per child and 5.00 per family. proceeds support community service with a December 12 dance and prize drawing.

Park Street Woman's Missionary Society Holds Kirby Christmas Meet

A bus load of about thirty Park Street WMS ladies joined Kirby members for a Christmas meeting on December 3. The program in Kirby included carols, readings, a candle lighting, stories, a solo, and prayers. Officers for 1948 were announced at a brief Park Street Sunday School session.

Oshawa Toronto dual highway opens with ceremony

The new two lane Oshawa to Toronto highway was officially opened on Wednesday December 3 at 3 pm by Honourable George Doucett Minister of Highways. A joint program by Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and local municipalities followed with a dinner at the Genosha Hotel. The route will speed travel and shorten times between Oshawa and Toronto as the new road replaces the old alignment.

Stolen Dressed Meat From Armstrong Slaughter House

Thieves entered the C G Armstrong slaughter house west of the village Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and carried off a baby beef between four and five hundred pounds and a young son around 250 pounds dressed. A second dressed pig remained. The sow carcass belonged to Vance Allen and the other pig to the Armstrong store. Liver hearts lungs lights head saw and knives were taken. Police are investigating.

Valued Mount Vernon Fire Chief Honored at Glen Island Dinner

More than 700 people attended a November 15 tribute dinner at Glen Island Casino for Fire Chief John Gibson who retires in 1948 after 48 years of service. Mayor Hussey presented a 20 foot cabin cruiser and model to Gibson on behalf of firemen and friends. Gibson and his wife have ties to Orono and a son who was the brother-in-law of the late Josh McCormick.

Many Attend Girl Guide Chicken Pie Supper

The Orone Girl Guides thank all who attended donated items and assisted at their annual supper and bazaar. The event drew large crowds and featured a Brownie display and busy booths. Proceeds support guide equipment supplies skating lessons and aprons for next year.

Figure Skating Taught At Orono Arena By Oshawa Coach

The Orono Athletic Association hires Miss Dianne Hambly of the Oshawa Skating Club for nine Saturday figure skating lessons at the Orono rink. Group lessons cost 2.00 for nine sessions, private lessons 4.50 total, first come first served for private slots, paid in advance.

Orono Girls Form First Homemakers Club Meeting

The first meeting of the new Homemaker’s Club gathered 14 girls last Monday in Orono. Jean Rainey was elected president, Carole Cornish secretary treasurer, and Kay Gamsby press secretary. Future plans include Achievement Day in July and a club name to be chosen at the next gathering.

Clarke Township voters chose reform minded council members on December 1 until the tenth annual election results show Hartwell Lowery as Deputy Reeve by 261 votes. James T Brown led council hopefuls with 622 votes while Art McKay and Harry Davey secured other seats.

Exhibit Urges Farmers To Grow More Feed Grain

Ontario Department of Agriculture launches a drive at the Royal Winter Fair to boost feed grain production by 50 million bushels in 1948 above the ten year average. The Crops Seeds and Weeds Branch, directed by John D. MacLeod, presents a graphic exhibit urging higher yields and larger acreage, to combat global shortages. The display, planned by W. D. Tolton, sits upstairs over the flower show.

Two Men Die In Millbrook House Fire

Five a.m. blaze destroyed a single storey dwelling of Johnston Fair on Millbrook’s southern edge. Residents Johnston Fair 87 and Rewben Todd 56 perished. Todd was a night visitor with Fair. Fire started about 5 15 am, bodies recovered. no inquest. Cause believed coal oil stove explosion. Fair family links noted with James and Kathleen Fair. survivor includes George Fair, James, and Florence.
