W M S Observe 75th Anniversary at Orono United

The Woman's Missionary Society of Orono United Church held its Thank Offering meeting on Tuesday November 22 marking the society's seventy fifth anniversary. Ninety members attended with music, prayers, readings, a guest address by Mrs Gray of Toronto and a reception in the church hall.

Heather Rebekahs Meet Sets Plans for December Events

The Heather Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting with Maude Cooper presiding and Emma Lunn assisting. Officers discussed sympathy efforts, a Christmas tree donation, a December 3 Bazaar, and a December 7 banquet for a Grand Master visit, with a Christmas party planned for December 20. A Darlington council session also re enacted an 1869 road bylaw transfer near the Trull estate. the original bylaw was lost in 1924 and recreated from records.

Sutcliffe Barratt Nuptials In Orono United Church

On Friday November 18 at Orono United Church Rev Basil Long officiated the marriage of Jennifer Mary Barratt and Leonard Leroy Sutcliffe. The couple will reside in Dr McKenzie's Main Street apartments in Orono.

Orono trustees award heating contract and discuss licenses

The Orono Police Trustees met to award a heating system contract for the Orono Community Centre to Ralph Hardware of Orono for 1750 dollars and to consider a village license outlet. They planned road sign updates with the county engineer, noted a recreation commission resignation, and asked for a new appointee. They also sought support from local officials to establish a driver and car license outlet in the village.

Nominations Open Friday for Clarke Township and Orono Posts

Nomination day set for Friday November 25 in Clarke Township and Orono Police Village. Nominations for Clarke Township Reeve Deputy Reeve and three Councillors run 1 pm to 2 pm at Town Hall Orono for Clarke Township Council. Orono Police Trustees nominations 7 pm to 8 pm at the Orono Community Centre. If more candidates than seats, election Monday December 6 polls 10 am to 7 pm.

Conversational French Classes Open In Orono

In Orono thirteen residents attended the opening meeting for a conversational French class to be held weekly for twenty weeks at the Orono School. The Department of Education sponsors the course open to all learners with a seven dollar registration fee. Miss Pauline Seguin will teach with info available from Miss Seguin or Mrs. H. Barlow.

Farm Safety Rally Monday November 28

The Durham County Farm Safety Council sponsors a Safety Rally Monday evening November 28 at 8 in Orono Town Hall. Constable Cornell of Bowermanville outlines highway safety and driving habits while H E Wright of the Ontario Department of Agriculture discusses home and farm accident sites. A film titled Safety Everywhere All the Time will be shown and prizes from a county poster contest will be awarded to winners from public schools. All are welcome.

Jill Ames Wins Durham Public Speaking Contest

Jill Ames of Central School Bowmanville won the Durham County Public Speaking Contest held November 16 in Orono Town Hall. Five East Durham speakers and five from West Durham competed. Brian Greer placed second. Shields and cups were presented by local leaders, with proceeds supporting community service efforts.

Recreation Commission Considers Senior Citizen Group

Clarke Township Recreation Commission met in Orono to discuss projects including a senior citizens group and a night course in Conversational French to start November 22 at Crèdo School under the Ontario Department of Education. Other ideas include sewing, knitting, a new ball diamond, and outdoor rinks at Kendal and Newtonville. Present were Mrs. H. Barlow, Chas Hutton, and Laverne Boyd.

Death of Norman R Andrews in Clarke Township

Norman Richard Andrews died suddenly at home in Orono on Saturday November 19 in his 74th year. He was born in Clarke Township, married in Bowmanville, and farmed there all his life. Survived by two daughters Hilda Moffat and Mary Robinson, two sons Frederick and Norman E A, a sister and a half sister. Funeral at Morris Funeral Home Bowmanville followed by burial in Orono Cemetery conducted by Rev Woodley.

One Act Plays In Grono December 10th

In Orono the Durham Drama Workshop of Bowmanville presents three one act plays on December 10. Members include several Orono residents. The group has trained for a year and a half. performances on December 9 and 16 mark their first efforts, with December 9 at Bowmanville Town.

High Schools Refuse Outside Students In Durham Board Move

In Port Hope last Wednesday the Durham District High School Board approved night classes in Conversational French at Orono High School and barred outside-area students after June 30, 1961 unless their boards cover tuition. The decision followed failed attempts to collect fees from Victoria County for Manvers students attending Millbrook schools. The board also considered legal steps and noted resignations at Bowmanville and Port Hope. Insurance for Bowmanville was raised to $1,108,000 with liability limits increased to $500,000.
