Elections Set in Clarke and Orono for December 5

Clarke Township voters will choose a Deputy Reeve and three Councillors in a six candidate race. Orono village selects five candidates for three Police Trustee seats. Polls open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday with several nominees declining additional rolls and two school trustees re-elected by acclaim.

Tobacco Industry Has Great Importance In Twin Counties

Stanley C. Smith, chairman of the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board, cited the crop and revenue outlook for United Counties and Northumberland and Durham as sales open across Ontario. He noted 149 tobacco farms covering 4,987 acres with yields rising since 1958 and predicted about 8.286 million pounds valued around 4.65 million dollars.

Tobacco Farms See Reduced Assessments for 1961

The Dur ham and Northumberland Flue-cured Tobacco Growers Association reports a lower 1961 assessment for United Counties farms after a special committee work. Highlights include tobacco exhibits at the Orono Fall Fair, with Kathy Foster as Tobacco Queen and Clarence Moore as Tobacco King. A Glenn Atkins farm demonstration near Baltimore may pinpoint grey tobacco causes. George Van Dam chaired a 250-strong annual Cobourg dinner.

The Rebekehs schedule their Annual Bazaar and Tea for Saturday December 3 at 2 30 pm in the 1 C C F Hall Mrs Irene Murray chairs the event and promises a large effort from all members The hall will feature a decorated Tea Room with lunch tea and a Christmas tree Mrs Emma Lunn hosts assisted by her team Home baking will be available from Velma Watson and supporters with Christmas Cakes for pre orders and extra for sale An apron booth led by Alice Hooey will provide gracious service with cheerful staff

175 Attend Annual Meeting Of Federation At Orono

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its annual meeting and banquet at the Orono Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday noon November 26 1960 with 175 members present. Speakers included Mr Howard Malcolm who described a Russia trip and its religious and social conditions.

Mosport Plans Outlined At Orone Dinner Meeting

About 125 residents attended a dinner hosted by the Orone Chamber of Commerce Clarke Township Council and Mosport Ltd. Mosport plans include a 2.45 mile track with 28 foot width and 175 mph potential to attract top drivers and international events in 1961, with profits reinvested in the sport.

Juniors Host Christmas Displays and Awards

Junior Horticultural Society members meet at Odd Fellow's Hall to craft Christmas scenes from old cards using starfoam and toothpicks. Seventy boys and girls participate, with singles and pairs prizes awarded to Donnie McKenzie Sharon Allin Dennis Cobbledick Annette and Tove Jorgensen Geke and Ralf DeJong Elaine and Julie Schmid.

The Orono Horticultural Society invites members to a Christmas meeting Thursday evening, November 24, with plans for seasonal displays and community demonstrations.

Orono Village Police Trustee Nomination Meeting Held

Forty ratepayers attended the annual nomination meeting at the Orono Community Centre. Five candidates were nominated for three posts, including incumbents H. M. Mercer G. E. Simpson R. C. Forrester and newcomers Lyall Lowery Charles Hutton. Mercer reported progress on the hydro system with $4000 spent on capital improvements and water heaters.
