Remembrance Day Service in Orono Focuses on Peace Through God

The Orono United Church hosted a Remembrance Day service led by Rev Basil Long who urged that true peace comes from God and acceptance of the Prince of Peace. A parade from Oddfellow’s Hall to the Orono Cenotaph featured veterans, Guides and Scouts, wreaths, white crosses, poppies, and a memorial reading of fallen names.

Orono Badminton Club Plans Season and Elections

The Orono Badminton Club elected Arnold Wallace as president for the coming year with Bill Reid off Kirby as treasurer and Peter Maartense assisting in dues. Mrs Arnold Wallace became secretary and Robert Johnston Roy Forrester joined as tournament committee members. Dues set at 2.50 adults 1.50 students, payable by December 1. Members pay 25 cents per night for birds. The club meets Wednesdays and Fridays at the Orono Community Centre and plans home and home winter tournaments with clubs from nearby towns.

Lovekin Re-elected President Of Durham Liberals

E R Lovekin was re elected president of the Durham Liberal Association at a Town Hall meeting in Orono attended by just over one hundred. A new officer slate was adopted and guest speaker Walter C Harris addressed the gathering.

Orono Teenagers Sell Church Calendars Drive

The Teenagers Group of the Orono United Church will conduct the annual sale of United Church Calendars. Calls will be made Thursday, November 24. Special Christmas greeting envelopes are available for sending calendars to relatives and friends. The group has traditionally been warmly received.

Orone Mission Band Opens Meeting with Carol Gilbank

Members of the Orone Mission Band gathered Monday afternoon in the church basement with Mrs A A Drummond directing a sing along. Carol Gilbank led the children in the mission band purpose and the treasurer reported as Chris Aistlett collected.

Booster Banquet Planned by Orono Athletic Group

Orono Amateur Athletic Association executives met in the municipal building chaired by E. A. Samuel with nine directors. They finalized plans for the annual booster banquet set for November 29 at Odd Fellows Hall, with tickets at 5 dollars including a chance to win a 100 dollar prize. Two tickets make a family season ticket for public skating. rink operation and hockey sponsorship were discussed amid a push to register all winter players for insurance.

Thomas Chipps Funeral Held in Oshawa

The funeral service for Thomas Chipps of 583 King Street East Oshawa who died in Oshawa General Hospital on November 10 was conducted by Rev R A Sharp of St Matthew's Anglican Church at McIntosh Anderson Funeral Home at 20 p m on Saturday November 12. Interment followed in Orono Cemetery with pallbearers Duncan Cameron Frank Jamieson Oscar Jamieson Ted Campin Orlie Conlin and Carl Williams.

Maria C Jewell obituary in Bowmanville

Maria Caroline Clemence Jewell died at home in Bowmanville on November 13 at age 91. She was the widow of William Jewell and survived by four daughters and one son. Funeral service was held November 15 at Morris Funeral Chapel with burial in Bowmanville Cemetery.

Orono Orphans Begin Season With First Practice

The Orono Orphans held their first workout of the season Monday evening at the Port Hope arena with seven teen members present. Manager Dane Found praised the turnout and expects a strong junior team this year as practices continue each Monday until league opens.

Harris speaks to Durham Liberals on Canada’s finances

Walter C. Harris former liberal finance minister addressed about 100 at the Orono Town Hall discussing mismanagement under the current government. He compared Liberal and Conservative budgets, warned of rising debt and unemployment funds, and urged freer trade and market access for Canada to reduce costs.

The Wo mans Association of Orono United Church held its November meeting at Mrs. Wm Irwin s home with 18 in attendance. The treasurer reported a $431 49 net from the Turkey dinner and plans were made to cater a banquet for the Federation of Agriculture on November 26. Members were assigned to committees, a nominating panel was named, and a joint Christmas meeting with the W M S was discussed.

Curvply Wood Products Expands Into Plastics In Orono

Curvply Wood Products Ltd of Orono will, after December 1, enter plastics with flat laminated Melamine tops for desks and industrial circuits. The plant adds 1000 square feet and a 400 ton press to mold laminated plastic. Established in 1949 by E. H. Samuel, the firm will continue moulded plywood while expanding into plastics.
