Nomination Meetings Set for Orono Friday November 22

Nomination sessions for Clarke Township and Clarke Township School Area Board open Friday afternoon in Orono. At 1 PM nominations for reeve deputy reeve and three councilors, plus three trustees for the school board, will be held in the Township Hall. If needed an election is scheduled for December 2.

Top Price 19 Cents At Durham Cattle Sale

The fifth annual Durham feeders sale at Sale Arena Orono sold 287 head by Jack Reid auction. Top price 19 cents paid by W. J. Hardy and Roy Howard for two lots. Hardy paid 17.75 cents average on 53 head. Don Boyington led buyers with 85 head. several loads went to Northumberland Cobourg Colborne area.

Wolf Cub meeting opens with Akela leads grand howl

Don Goode presides as the Wolf Cub pack gathers with 31 of 36 cubs present after the grand howl. Cubs mark attendance, patrols inspected, then play a rowdy game called chicken followed by Tender pads laws and Cub promise and Stars knots lessons.

Kingston visitors join Robbins family at Royal Winter Fair

Brian Kingston and Mr. Mrs A Loucks and family visited with Mer A Robbins and Ross Robbins. The event marked Mr. A Robbins 82nd birthday as the group toured the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto with Mr and Mrs A Young and Mr and Mrs C Martin.

OHS Weekly Report On Annual Christmas Formal

The OHUS monthly party at Town Hall featured square and round dancing with music by Mac Ramsberry Fayt Adams and Phil Long. The December 20 formal will blend Seven Aires alumni and current students with reception decorations and Peterborough orchestra. Admission is three dollars for non students two dollars for DOHS members and two fifty for mixed couples.

Women’s Association Meeting Emphasizes Leadership Education

The Women’s Association held its regular Thursday meeting with 3rd Vice President Mrs. Hooey presiding due to the illness of the president. Devotional messages focused on talents and leadership education, remembrance themes, and prayers, as 35 fruit boxes were sent to shut-ins and funds from turkey banquets exceeded $200.

Orono Police Trustees meet to grant a gas transmission franchise to Consumer's Gas Company, study the draft by law, and review village street signs, lighting, and ditch work. They approve a lower road work payment, grant a garage permit, and plan for upcoming elections and dances at the Hi-Teens venue.

Ganaraska River Authority approves water basin plans

Ganaraska River Conservation Authority approved options to acquire two properties in Hope and Clarke townships for water basin development. Dalton Lindsay described a 65 acre Hope property with white pine and red oak, valuing timber by government stump age rates. W. W. Lord favored preservation over sale. A Clarke township parcel owned by W. E. Armstrong was approved for purchase steps. A water use survey urged irrigation basins for six locations benefiting tobacco farmers, with costs borne by growers and local committees to organize.

Juniors Edge Seniors In Inter-Form Rugby 7 6

Juniors defeated seniors 7 to 6 in an inter form rugby clash at O H S. Wayne Bailey scored a 20 yard kick and a touchdown for the juniors. Everett Lake made a key interception while Eric Carleton scored for the seniors. Majorette Corps entertained at halftime under Mrs St John, and Mr Rutherford coached both squads.

Hi Teens Dance and Draw New Years Eve Event

A five piece dance band from Bowmanville will play December 31 at a New Year’s dance. Tickets go on sale later this week with a Sylvania Clock Radio drawing just before midnight. Lunch, drinks, and party supplies will be provided and dress is optional. Plan ahead and arrange babysitting.

Orono Hydro Commission Considers Flat Rate Hot Water Heaters

The Orono Hydro Electric Commission discussed returning to hot water heater installations with a flat monthly rate to compete with natural gas. Manager H Dent reported Belleville’s Ontario Hydro is studying a flat rate scheme and that three phase service may be added on Cobbledick Street. Accounts totaled $2450.71 with a $731.43 balance. peak load remains below last year.

Orono Pee-Wees Win Crest for 1957 League Finish

At a Lakeshore Minor Baseball Association dinner in Newcastle Mr. Graham and Mr. Gamsby presented crests to Orono Pee-Wee Players for topping the 1957 league series. Orono also claimed provincial honours in the Intermediate class. Cups were awarded to Port Hope PeeWees Bowmanville Bantams Cobourg Juveniles and Cobourg Midgets for league championships.
