Police Trustees Return Six Attend Orono Meeting

Nomination meeting for the Police Village of Orono drew only six ratepayers. Trustees H M Mercer S B Rutherford and R C Forrester were reappointed by acclamation. Expenditures described include streets $1741.98 sidewalks $1447.00 fire department $1447.00 and lighting $1230.06. A year end balance of 864.27 is forecast, with by laws discussed and a motion to raise trustee remuneration to 50 dollars passed.

Cobourg Council Advances By-law for Aged Home Expansion

In Cobourg the United Counties Council gave first and second readings to a by-law allowing debentures to finance an extension to the Home for the Aged. The plan, supported by welfare officials, aims to replace the dilapidated facility after a harsh grand jury report urged immediate new construction.

Orono Athletic Banquet Sells All Tickets For Benefit

Orono Athletic Association held a banquet with 200 tickets at five dollars each, selling out to support the Orono rink for the next season. Each ticket included a turkey banquet and a chance to win one hundred dollars. Winners in the elimination draw were Alfred Jakeman, Wilda Middleton, and Kathy Armstrong.

Pictures Of Local Interest Shown At Evening Auxiliary

The Hivening Auxiliary held its regular meeting on Thursday November 21 with Alma Mitchell opening. A nominating committee including Edith Sherwin Merle Gilbert and Ethel Tyrrell will bring a slate for the coming year to the next meeting. A visit report on cancer dressings in Bowmanville and plans to invite a representative were noted. A Presbyterian secretary vacancy was announced with no nominations offered. Edith Sherwin led the meeting as Kay Chapman performed two solos and Mrs Chap man was introduced before a vote of thanks. A lunch followed the social half hour.

Free Mass Tuberculosis Xray Survey Planned in 1958

Dr W L Jamieson announced a free mass Xray survey for tuberculosis for Northumberland from April 21 to May 17 and for Durham from August 25 to September 20. Rev Canon Hugh Bedford-Jones presided at the executive council meeting.

Travelling Baskets Net $51 for Local Guides

The Local Association of the Girl Guides and Brownies met Monday at Mrs. Ross Gilbart’s home. Proceeds from the Travelling Baskets totaled 51.80 after visits to 187 homes. The group approved selling the organ, storing benches, and moving remaining items to Town Hall.

K Teens Warm Up Dance This Saturday at Town Hall

The Hi-Teens sponsor a nonformal warm up dance at Orono Town Hall this Saturday. Music by Glad Brown Ken Neal Mac Ransberry and Faye Adams features new records such as Silhouettes Wild One and When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano. Adults are urged to attend with teens and learn the rock and roll stroll for the school formal.

Five candidates vie for Township School Area board seats

At a Clarke Township meeting eight candidates were nominated for three board seats. The nominees include former members E F R Osborne Reginald Elliott Harry L Wade and five others. Election day is Monday with polls from 10 am to 7 pm. Reeve J T Brown noted road and school developments and calls for better rural education and facility upgrades.

Beard Discusses Locations For New High School

Durham District High Board met at Bowmanville High School to discuss site choices for a new high school replacing Orono and alleviating Bowmanville crowding. No decision was made. the site committee will study further and report with options. Bowmanville High School opens tonight with invitations to municipalities and other parties.

Dept forbids local two county deer season

The Lands and Forests Department refused a two day open deer season for Northumberland and Durham counties saying the plan to limit to residents of the two counties discriminates in favor of a minority. The department said a season open to all residents could receive favourable consideration upon year’s end.

Improvements For Skiers At Brimacombe Hill

Oshawa Ski Club members anticipate a strong season at Brimacombe Hill near Kirby with a new club house 82 by 24 feet featuring a snack bar and large fireplace. A ski jump and two new trails plus a second beginner tow enhance the hill as professional jumpers are hoped to visit. The club also elected its Snow Queen at a recent Oshawa social.
