Youthful Orators Shine At Durham County Honors

A large crowd attended a Durham County Trustees and Ratepayers Association event in the town hall where eighteen contestants delivered varied subjects from Our Flag to Rubber manufacture. Margaret Bennett of Port Hope won the Toronto Durham Club Shield and will represent Durham County at the Brighton contest on November 18.

Northern Ontario unrest feared as Hepburn proposes reserve force

Provincial police warn of possible disorders in Northern Ontario sections this winter. Premier Hepburn suggests mustering an emergency squad of 50 reserve constables for training at armouries. The department and the Canadian Forestry Association operated the theatre car for educational purposes. The car showed a film, distributed departmental cookery booklets to women, and handed out pamphlets on Dominion fisheries resources to pupils and teachers.

Orono votes to buy hydro system by wide margin

A town poll in Orono shows 132 for and 16 against purchasing the hydro system to keep profits at home and lower bills. A second ballot on buying power from the Ontario Hydro Commission passes 135 to 13, with two spoiled ballots. The system will operate under the Orono Hydro Commission, after earlier results in January 1985 favored purchase 90 to 84.

Fowl Supper Draws Large Crowd at Park Street United Church

Rain did not dampen attendance as Park Street United Church basement hosted a goose dinner drawing about four hundred people. Rev Littlewood welcomed guests before hymns, a piano duet by Jim Powers and Enid Cobbledick, a vocal quartet, and an address by Mrs Evelyn Bateman World Traveller of Oshawa closed the program.
