Clarke Township Electors Set Nomination Meeting and Poll Dates

Clarke Township Council meets with full attendance to establish the 1958 nomination date for Reeve Deputy Reeve and three councillors and the December polling schedule. The bylaw designates November 27 as the nomination day and December 7 for polling in multiple divisions across Orono Kendal Newtonville and surrounding areas.

Col Lloyd Speaker At Sunday Armstice Service

Col F P Lloyd V D CBE spoke at the Sunday Armstice service. His career spanned the Saskatchewan Light Infantry the 90th Bdln Winnipeg Rifles and the 44th Bn CEF. He rose from private to major and commanded the 4th Field Regt RCA before WWII.

Orono Mourns Josiah Morris Death of Local Leader at 72

One of Orono’s oldest residents Jack Morris died suddenly on Monday October 26 while adding poles to the Orono Telephone system near Kendal district. He built a life around farming freighting and then managed the Orono Telephone Company growing from 30 to about 600 phones. He is survived by his wife Mary Jane Stapleton his son Milton two sisters and was eulogized for community service and loyalty at St Saviour’s Anglican church with interment in Orono cemetery.

Orono Fish And Hunt Masquerade Big Success

The Orono Fish and Hunt Club held its Annual Masquerade at the Orono Town Hall drawing a crowd of eighty five, the largest ever for the event. Prizes went to winners judged by Mrs. M. J. Tamblyn and Mr. J. E. Armstrong. dancing followed by James Lowery and his orchestra. A lunch of sandwiches cake and coffee was served during intermission.

Local Horses Feature Of Race Meet At Orone Club

The Orone Turf Club held a harness race feature on a recent Saturday afternoon with four races eight heats, all close finishes and high-class horses. The track was excellent and attendance totaled a substantial crowd despite the incomplete report.

Orono Athletic Association Needs Support or Dissolution

The Orono Athletic Association faces a minority turnout and risks dissolving if community backing remains low. Members urged to attend Monday November 9 at Orange Hall to plan next year’s programs including the rink Bantam baseball and summer activities. Local horse racing notes and a final 1953 Orono Turf Club meet announced with free admission for ladies and a $1 charge for gentlemen.

Orono Athletic Association Seeks Backing At Monday Meeting

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held a dampening meeting with nine attendees as officers were elected for 1954. A second meeting set for Monday at 8:00 pm will decide if winter and summer programs continue and explore fundraising, with parent support seen as crucial.

Arm Injury From Truck Overturn At Newcastle Station

Mr. Raye West sustained arm injuries when a truck carrying iron overturned at the C. P. R. station in Newcastle. West, riding at the back and guiding the driver, tried to jump clear as the load shifted but was struck by falling iron, breaking two bones near the wrist and shattering the elbow. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Bowmanville and the arm placed in a double cast.

O H S Halloween Parties Highlight October Events

The O H S held a Hallowe en party on October 29 with a costume parade dance and a lunch of doughnuts and cider ending at midnight. Grade 10 initiated grade 9 pupils and an orchestra was thanked for their help. The following night October 30 the Millbrook visit featured a grade 10 play "Why School Teachers go Nuts."

Halloween Pranks Leave Orono Village in Turmoil

Halloween night pranks in Orono featured two highway fires ignited by piled tires, barricades set at village ends, and 38 broken street bulbs with two damaged sockets. Provincial Police and locals restored hazards while youngsters gathered candy and played shell out despite the disruption.
