Clarke Township Council Debates Roads and Pension Plan

The Clarke Township Council meets to discuss Mosport Ltd access roads, road widening from Mill pond, and Winter Works. A pension plan proposal by E R Woodyard is approved in principle with costs around 1600 dollars, while road and development road shifts and water main by law on Division Street are debated. Debenture approval for Darlington schools is deferred pending Darlington Township consent.

Orono Band Holds Annual Meeting

The Orono Band held its annual meeting Tuesday October 25 with many members present. President Bill Allin presided and Gerald Brown chaired nominations. Officers elected: President Dick Morton, secretary treasurer R C Forrester, Bandmaster Donald Hamm. Vice president and directors dropped for the year. Drum heads purchased and lettered Orono Band. M J Tamblyn resignation as bandmaster accepted with regret. Refreshments followed at the Orono Restaurant.

Rotary Send Young Farmers to Ottawa from Durham County

Bowmanville Rotarians sent four Durham County youths to Ottawa for a weekend tour. James Rickard James Rowan and Douglas Jose from Bowmanville Ennis killen from Newcastle and chaperone James Coombes accompanied a group that met requirements from 4-H and livestock clubs. They stayed at Lord Elgin Hotel visited Parliament and the National Museum and toured embassies and experimental farms. Transportation and expenses were provided by Bowmanville Rotary Club.

Orono Amateur Athletic Association Banquet Set for Nov 29

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association elected officers for 1960 61 and approved operating the Orono Rink again this winter. A five dollar banquet is planned for November 29 with tickets including a season skating pass. Registration night for hockey players is Friday at the Orono Community Centre.

Eastern W M S Hold Fall Rally in Maple Grove United Church

The Eastern Section W M S held a fall rally at Maple Grove United Church with Mrs Harold Ferguson presiding. Speakers included Mrs C S Patterson on Trends in Women's Work and Into all the world together. Local leaders urged fundraising, libraries, and overseas missions while plans for a new Board of Women and combined magazine were announced.

Orono Ratepayers Reject Water Plan After Close Vote

A Monday vote in the Village of Orono rejected installing municipal water by 191 against to 137 in favor with 328 of 403 eligible voters casting ballots. Earlier on Monday, a fire destroyed an unoccupied Clarke Township farm house on Clarke Line seven, just south of the first side road east of Kirby, owned by Tom Tebble. The blaze began around 12:30 a.m. and left the structure in ashes with no furnishings or services.

Durham Medical Meeting Hosts 180 Members and Banquet

The 180 members of the Durham County Co operative Medical Services attended the annual meeting at Oddfellow's Hall. A turkey banquet was served by Heather Rebekah Lodge members. Rev. Frank Banister urged resilience amid global ills, citing politics, hunger, birth rates, and religious martyrdom for context.

Twenty Three Join Junior Horticultural Society Meeting

The first meeting of the Junior Horticultural Society was held at 7 00 pm in the Girl Guide Room Community Centre attended by 23 children. Susan Gilbert named acting president Annette Jorgenson acting secretary. Members planted hyacinth bulbs and learned cuttings for geraniums. A Christmas project was planned for November 24 in Oddfellow's Hall with a 25 cent fee and supplies requested. Parents welcome.
