Orono Junior Gardeners Learn How To Plant Bulbs

Regular monthly meeting at United Church Orono Oct 26 with 16 members and 3 visitors. Members prepared posters for the Christmas show and arranged materials for next meeting. Mrs Fairbrother demonstrated bulb planting, soil moisture, and light exposure. Narcissus bulbs planted. winners in bulbs draws Gay Quinton and Margaret Moffat. Corn Land Day draws 350 in cold rain at Garden Hill

About 350 corn growers from Ontario Durham Victoria and Peterborough attended the district corn land day on Rev Gray's Durham County farm Garden Hill. The East Central Soil and Crop Improvement Association sponsored the event featuring test plots of 14 corn hybrids and demonstrations on fertilizer variation stalk strength planting dates density and moisture. Agricultural engineer H E Bellman argued high moisture corn benefits outweigh drawbacks for many farms including larger beef operations. Engineer graduate T A Brown outlined silo types for growers.

Seventeen New Recruits Enrolled In Orono Brownies

Seventeen new Brownies were enrolled in the Orono Brownie group on Monday evening, raising the total to forty. The ceremony in the Christian Education Building lower auditorium was attended by mothers and featured songs. Led by Mrs. George Clark and aided by Girl Guides, new members Colleen Gordon Nancy White Debbie Staples Brenda West Laurie West Joanne Ten- joined the group.

Organize New Liberal Riding Association

Initial steps to organize the Liberal Party in the new Federal Riding of Northumberland Durham were taken at a Port Hope meeting on October 27. Wilf Husk ilson of Cobourg and Harry Wade of Newtonville chaired the joint Northumberland and Durham Liberal Executives meeting. Glenholme Hughes of Bowmanville was named interim organiser, with William Williams of Cobourg assisting. the first executive will be elected at a near-future founding convention.

Clarke High School Commencement Exercises Friday November 17

The fifth annual Clarke High School Commencement will be held in the school auditorium on Friday November 17. The Orono Junior Band and a choral group will provide musical selections for the program. Walter Pitman registrar of Trent University Peterborough will be the guest speaker.

Enrolment Grows for Orono Girl Guides

The Orono Girls Guides now total 24 members. They meet weekly at the Orono United Church with leader Mrs Nel Snelders.

Hesper Dean 40th Anniversary Celebrated at Odd Fellows Hall

An informal Sunday gathering marked Mr. and Mrs. Hesper Deans 40th wedding anniversary at Odd Fellows Hall. Pink decor and a three tier cake centered the long tea table while family and 120 guests from Toronto Port Hope Bowmanville and Orono district offered best wishes. Grandsons Dean and Gary Cox supervised the guest book as Heather Rebekah Lodge served lunch.

Orono and Lockhart Schools Board Approves Ed Upgrades

The Clarke Township Public School Board at its October meeting authorize two architectural firms to survey Orono Public School for alterations and add ons. They also authorize buying a Reading Laboratory Series and using the Orono Municipal Building for PE classes. At Lockhart’s School plans include ETV antennae and a system to ensure classroom reception. Orono boys register for winter hockey

Sixty four boys registered at a registration night in Orono Arena to play hockey under the Orono Amateur Athletic banner. An additional 15 to 20 are expected when hockey opens later this month. The Orono Hockey Mothers sponsored a skate and equipment exchange with good use and possible purchase of sweaters and a time clock. Over fifty have enrolled in figure skating with the Orono Figure Skating Club, with more expected when classes start as ice becomes available.

Brownie And Guides Clear 175 From Sale At Church

The Orona Girl Guides and Brownies held a sale and tea last Saturday in the Orona Tn nted Church basement. After expenses the groups expect to clear about 175 dollars from a sale featuring baking vegetables fruit cider and honey crafts. A penny sale lucky dip white elephant booth and tea were part of the event served by the Brownies and Guides.

Hope Township Enacts Land and Building Restrictions

The Ontario government authorized strict subdivision controls capping land sales at ten acres and suspended building permits for six months in Hope Township after a Toronto businessman sold 390 building lots. Deeds registered October 5 to 12 in Port Hope mix buyers as Hooey and Young are noted. the lots abut a potential 900 acre Hydro site. Total sales about $275 000. council fears tax burdens for education and services.
