Orono police trustees review Ontario board letter on road project

The Orono Police Trustees discussed a letter from the Ontario Municipal Board about a proposed 108000 road project within the Police Village. The board outlined steps to advertise the application to local property owners and allow objections, plus requirements for adequate storm sewer treatment and by law 1559 borrowing from CIBC.

Rebekah Lodge Holds Regular Meeting In Orono Hall

Heather Rebekah Lodge No 334 met Tuesday October 24 in 10 C F Hall with Sister Jean Lewis presiding. Officers absent, reports on wheel chair loan program, catering, annual bazaar, and upcoming initiation of four Ganaraska members. Village sidewalk work, ditching on Division Street, street painting costs discussed.

Orono Hydro Commission Raises Renter Deposit to 20

The Orono Hydro Commission met and, on the manager Mel Downs’s recommendation, passed a resolution to increase deposits for new rental customers from 10 to 20 dollars as bills approach the 20 dollar mark for two months. The panel also discussed bulk metering for multiple dwellings and owner responsibility for tenant hydro use.

Break-ins hit Orono Medical Centre and Fair Grounds

Last week vandalism at Orono Medical Centre on Cobbledick Street damaged doors and a basement window. A small amount of money was stolen. Police investigate. At Orono Fair Grounds, washrooms and poultry building were damaged with doors locks and windows smashed. Fair board president Mr. Wm Slater says trespassing will be prohibited on grounds. Washrooms were built before September fair opening.

Durham Co operative Medical Services Surplus Transferred

The 20th annual meeting at Orono United Church drew 130 members. A $38,929 surplus was moved to the general reserve. President Moffat noted 1967 premium income of $100,958 with a net saving of $8,929, down from 1966’s $18,895. The group discussed Ontario and federal health plans and kept premium rates lower than comparable co operatives.

Holstein Hope Sets Notable Production Record in Ontario

Fordholm Achilles Hope, a ten-year-old purebred Holstein cow from Glen Rae Farm in Bowmanville Ontario, has completed an impressive production test. In 305 days of twice-daily milking she yielded 19 396 pounds of milk with 804 pounds of fat, test 41 5 percent butterfat, surpassing Breed Class Averages of 171 percent for milk and 193 percent for fat. Hope is rated Very Good for body conformation and is sired by the Excellent and Class Extra sire Seiling Sovereign Achilles.

Port Hope Hospital Board Backs Regional Nursing Plan

Port Hope and District Hospital Trust Board voted unanimously to join a regional nursing school plan. Administrators John Davis and J. S. Laurie presented details from a late September Oshawa General Hospital meeting where the Ontario Hospital Services Commission discussed the proposal.

Mrs Heten Schmid of Orono has spent two years gathering facets and information on Orono history with the aim of publishing a book covering the area from its early era to today. She is compiling business, family, organization, and image material and holds many photos of bygone days. Continued on page 6.
