Orono Agencies Seek Township Help For Ice Project Debt
Representatives of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association and Orono Figure Skating Club asked Clarke Township to assume the remaining $5,500 debt on the artificial ice project. Total costs reach $19,892.38 with $9,640.68 raised from canvas and donations. Council left the matter to be decided next year.

GO Transit Line Extension Denied by Officials
Ontario GO service officials deny reports that the GO line will extend east of Pickering to Oshawa. A spokesman calls the report unfounded. In Oshawa, Charles MacNaughton said decisions on extension would wait until 1969 after early operation studies.

Armistice Service Held In Orono
Royal Canadian Legion members and ex service personnel gathered for the annual Armistice service in Orono. The Bowmanville Legion Pipe Band led a parade to the Cenotaph where Rev Basil Long gave prayers and names of the fallen were read by William Slater and Harvey Partner. The Last Post and Reveille were played by Roy Forrester as the band played the lament. Afterward the parade proceeded to Orono United Church for an evening service. Wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by Reeve Roy Foster.

MPPs Receive Centennial Medals for Durham and Northumberland
Alex Carruthers of Durham and Russell Rowe of Northumberland were among about 20 000 Canadians awarded centennial medals by the Secretary of State for meritorious service. The honors included a brief statement of recognition and were sent by registered mail. Carruthers, born in Alvinston, pursued teaching in Port Hope and later entered politics, winning a large majority this year. Rowe, born in Seymour Township, served as RCAF pilot instructor 1942–45, then worked in real estate and investment before entering politics in 1963 and winning this year with a large majority.

Hope Township council passes new building bylaw
A bylaw tightening building regulations was passed at the Hope Township council meeting in Port Hope. The measure sets minimum lot sizes and frontage, requires 1080 to 1200 square feet living areas depending on dwelling type, and restricts building distances from road lines. The six month holding order on permits was also lifted after discovering 390 subdivided lots from a Bruce Dinner farm sale. Four of Clarke Township’s five councillors plan to run for a new two year term, with one seat vacant.

Lake Ontario pollution may be cleaned within years
The Ontario Water Resources Commission says the end of municipal pollution in Lake Ontario is in sight perhaps three or four years away. A four year test begun in 1961 in the lakeshore area east of Toronto to Kingston showed water near 18 centres failed standards and those towns were ordered to curb discharges. By next year some centres, acting with the OWRC, plan new sewage treatment plants and sanitary sewers, with construction to begin within 12 months.

Council Increases Interest On Overdue Taxes
Clarke Township council gave three readings to a by law raising monthly interest on tax arrears to two thirds of 1 percent effective January 1 1968. A second by law approved two readings for an 108080 road expenditure in Orono on request from the Ontario Municipal Board. Three readings were also given to two employee benefit by laws covering sick leave nine holidays annual vacation and medical and hospital costs at 50 percent.
