Raye West scored four of eight for the Bowmanville Orono Combines in an exhibition win over Whitby Larrys in Bowmanville. West along with Dean West and Charles Armstrong contributed six Combines goals, while Sonny Hooper added two on the Robie Robinson Bill Burwick line.

Freight Trains Collide East of Bowmanville
A westbound freight train crashed into a standing train one mile east of Bowmanville early Monday morning. The collision left a derailed engine and seven scattered freight cars with stones and gravel in the wreckage. Only the moving train’s engineer was hurt. Wilbert Hammett sustained a fractured shoulder and cracked ribs after jumping from the train. Fireman George Cooper leaped free and was uninjured.

Mutual Aid Plans Form in Cobourg Meeting
Two Orono fire department representatives attended a Cobourg gathering where a Mutual Aid Organization was formed. Fire chiefs and firefighters from all United Counties departments joined to plan a winter program of studies lectures and practical firefighting experience led by Bruce Mercer and Arthur McLaren.

Pheasant hunt in Clarke Township judged average this year
The Clarke Township pheasant hunt runs through this Saturday with Game Warden Ken Tolmie calling it average compared to other years. Birds appear dispersed due to warm weather, with an estimated 75 to 100 shot so far, fewer than last year’s three day total of about 250. Good hunting noted near Blackstock in Darlington Township and south of Lindsay.

Memorial Cairn Site Chosen For Orono Honor Stone
Orono memorial committee selects location opposite Station Street at Mrs Lycett’s for a stone cairn. A nine foot monolith offered from Claremount Ontario is being considered, with a price of 275 for a cairn, and transport planned if suitable. A committee delegation visits Claremount to view the stone.

Veterans Plan Memorial Cairn in Orono After War
A well attended Canadian Legion and service veterans meeting in Orono proposed a Stone Cairn cenotaph to memorialize locals who died in World War I II and Korea. Orono hosts annual masquerade dance draws 100 plus
In Orono Townsh in Hall on Friday October 26, over one hundred attended the Hallowe en masquerade dance. Music by Mrs Gladys Brown and others kept guests dancing while costumes ranged from Indians and cavemen to Elvis Presley and gypsies. Lunch was served and weather dampened spirits slightly. Meanwhile local athletics report PeeWee and Bantam baseball teams reaching Ontario playdowns with early exits, and rink plans and juvenile hockey discussion continuing with a public meeting planned.

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association voted to sponsor a Junior Hockey team this year to play in a regional league and enter playdowns for Ontario. A committee will form a league with Newcastle Kendal and Millbrook, recruit coaches and managers, and promote three teams Pee Wee Bantam and Junior.
