On May 20 a large group from the Orono Women's Institute traveled by bus to Blackstock for the District Annual Convention. Members exhibited antique attire such as dresses nightgowns hats and shoes over a century old from ten W I branches while two members from each branch led the roll call. Mrs Fred Bowen president of the Orono W I wore a white wedding gown once worn by Mrs James Dickson, and Mrs Foster Ferguson appeared in a black lace dress cape and bonnet from the past century.

Adele Iorton Honoured at Mixed Shower for Miss Morton
Miss Adele Morton was guest of honour at a miscellaneous shower Friday evening at the home of Mrs J D Brown and Mrs H E Millson. About forty friends gathered to honour the bride elect with tulip lilac decorations and a corsage of Lily of the Valley and Pansies. A mock wedding followed with Hilda Tamblyn as minister, Mary Rutherford as bride, Rena Tamblyn as groom, then refreshments.

Mrs L Thorne moved to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Toronto on Saturday morning and was accompanied by her daughter Mrs Alva Swarbrick. Her relatives joined weekend visits, with several members travelling between Toronto Oshawa and local summer homes. District activities at Blackstock on May 20 featured an Institute roll call wearing period costume and a China themed program with silk displays. A stroke left Mr Tom Falls briefly comatose but improving by Monday.

Evening Auxiliary Meeting Highlights Community Friendship Picnic
The Evening Auxiliary held its regular meeting on Thursday May 21 in the Sunday School room. President Hileen Billings presided, with Kay Rainey leading the group and giving the devotional. Alma Cuttell read a poem and a skit by Christian Citizenship linked Women’s Missionary Work to the United Nations. Kay Chapman sang Land of Hope and Glory. The June meeting will be led by Mary Rutherford and Community Friendship, a family picnic in the Park inviting New Canadian friends and families. Social hour followed.

Orono Police Trustees Set 4 Mill Rate For Village
The Orono Police Trustees set a four mill village tax rate for 1953, half of last year’s eight mills, and urged the Township Council to oil all village roads without surfacing. They requested county road oiling from the sixth line into highway 35 at the junction and asked the clerk to contact Mr. C. Graham for disposal area plans. Dr. Taggart was to consult the Department of Health on carcass disposal. Sid Barraball received a class B garage license with condition to relocate within a year. Incorporation remained under discussion with no plan finalized.
