Literary Society Delights Town Hall With Snappy Program

The Literary Society of Orone Continuation School held its third and final group meeting May 18 led by Maureen McKenna. Gwendolyn Chatterton opened, with Ross Taylor and Barbara Rolph assisting, then solos by Helen Woods and Anna Marie Hall, dances and comic numbers by the group, piano solos by Wanda Malley and Donald MacLaren, and a play titled Wor Whom the Telephone Rings featuring Mr. Harding and Ross.

Clarke Union Home and School Club Meets in May

The Clarke Union Home and School Club held its regular May meeting with a large attendance. The program featured solos by B Chapman and Betty Chapman, readings by Anne Marie Sherwin and Ethel Danson, a slide show by Dr. McKenzie, and a Florida trip reel. The group recited prayers, enjoyed lunch, and socialized after the event.

Bride Lois Turner Weds Edward Morton at St George’s Newcastle

Reverend Dewdney officiated the Anglican church ceremony uniting Lois Kathleen Turner and Edward Robert John Morton. The bride wore ivory supper satin with a princess headdress and veil, carried deep pink roses, and was attended by her sister Jean in blue taffeta with pink carnations. Best man was Charles Morton. A reception followed and the couple traveled west after the celebration.

Orono Women's Institute Holds May Meeting

The Orono branch held its May meeting with J J Mellor of Durham County Co operative Medical Services speaking on the hospital plan. Mrs O W Rolph reviewed the Home Economics cooperative program. Officers Rally and Citizenship or Clothing conference requested. A $15 donation was sent to the Institute for the Blind. Various readings, a letter from Mrs Susan Hutt, a historic house talk, and a community sing ended with tea.

Evening Auxiliary Meeting at Mrs McLaren’s Home

About thirty three members of the Evening Auxiliary met at Mrs C McLaren’s home for a social evening. Mrs BR Chapman presided and read scripture. Mrs R Keane sang Smiling Through. Mr Eustace spoke on home missions with Winnipeg experience. Stella Best sang Into a tent where a gypsy boy lay. Final business arranged catering for the W I district annual on June 6.

Dr Walter Brown Guest Speaker At Sunday School Anniversary

Dr Walter Brown gave the keynote address at the Sunday School anniversary in Orono. He urged loyalty to Victoria College and the United Church, urged support for the ministry, and highlighted needs for the church’s future. Norman Mountjoy and others organized a new County Commission for Durham with a County Rally planned for October 25.

Jamieson Weds Holdcroft at Kingsway United Church

Betty Margaret Holdcroft daughter of Dr. Donald J. Holdcroft marries William Duncan Jamieson son of Dr. and Mrs. Ross A. Jamieson of Toronto at Kingsway Lembton United Church. The couple plan a short honeymoon then reside in Mimico.

W C T U Annual Meeting Held at Park Street Church

The Wo man s Christian Temperance Union met at Park Street United Church on May 26 with Mrs R Rainey presiding. Miss Edith Sherwin led devotions and quoted a faithful ministerial remark about Christ s Kingdom lasting despite world turmoil. Officers were reelected for 1948 49 and the county convention scheduled for Hampton on June 16 with prayers to close.

Clarke School Area Moves On With Improvements

The Area Board met May 19 at McLean's School to approve minutes and report progress. Insulation at No 9 finished and 18 seats sent to No 4. toilets planned for Nos 13 17 21. cistern work for No 21 to proceed if bids satisfactory. Resignation of music teacher George Campbell accepted. Wiring contract for No 1 awarded to Joice and Sweaner Port Hope. Levy rates set and transportation funds approved totaling 1 609.19. May 28 school inspection set. next meeting June 16 1948 at Port Granby School.
