Mrs. O W Rolph is chosen District President as the West Durham Women’s Institute holds its annual meeting in Orono on June 4. Degree Team Confers Rebekah Degrees in Oshawa
The Degree Team of Heather Lodge visited Sunshine Lodge in Oshawa to confer Rebekah Degrees. Guests included Sister Mabel Disney and Sister Mae Bunker. Brother Wittle Wilson was commended for the degree work while credit went to his team. A luncheon followed the meeting.

Federation Picnic Planned and County Displays Set
Durham County Federation of Agriculture met June 3 with strong turnout. Plans included a three team softball program Manvers and Cavan Darlington Clarke plus a County Coop exhibit and a hospital information booth. About 100 Scouts camped at the County Camp site for tree planting and grounds use was requested by four groups. Directors Picnic is set for July 18 at the County Picnic Grounds with supper at 5. One third of prize money for a Gar-denill potato club was pledged. A township meetings committee was formed and fall talks on Co op Insurance were scheduled. July and August director meetings are suspended. Next meeting September 2 at Western Banister’s home.

The Wo men s Association of Park Street Church met on Tuesday afternoon June 8 with good attendance. Plans were made for a strawberry festival to be held at the end of June. In Monday June 7 1948 Ontario provincial election the Progressive Conservatives won power with 58 seats down from 66. Durham County Mayor John Foote defeated Liberal Garnet Shield and CCF Norman Allison. CCF gained seats mainly in cities while Conservatives held rural areas. Newman Allison ran strongly in Port Hope Darlington Bowmanville.

Immunization Efforts Highlight 1947 48 School Health Program
Northumberland and Durham counties reported 3 524 immunized students against diphtheria and 869 vaccinated for smallpox during the 1947 48 school year. Health unit nurses conducted classroom inspections and medical examinations to detect defects, improve housing and sanitation, and guide parents in treatment and prevention.

Clarke Council approves road work and salaries
Clarke Township Council met June 1 with full attendance. Minutes were approved. The road superintendent salary of 1800 per year was approved and filed. Investigations into hospital notices and township liabilities were ordered. Proposals to protest CN R rail diversion and arrange meetings with officials were requested. Wages for road workers set at 85 cents per hour and estimates ordered for several road projects and side roads.
