Federal Budget Highlights And Tax Reforms

The Dominion Government unveiled a budget with cuts and reforms. Eight percent sales tax cut on canned foods. theatre and dance hall taxes removed but swapped for provincial taxes. Five percent on pari mutuel bets lifted. Age 65 plus income tax exemptions rise to 1250 single and 2000 married. 25 percent sales tax removed from inexpensive alarm clocks and plated cutlery. Surplus forecasts: 670 million for next year, 549 million current. Debt reduced by 1400 million. reserves at 668 million. Finance Minister Abbott warns of occasional large expenses and urges savings for a rainy day.

Doctor Stricken On Trip To Former Home

Dr. J F W Chester 50 of 993 Kingston Rd collapsed with a coronary thrombosis and died in Huntsville while about to deposit a coin at a parking meter. He had spent the weekend at Port Sydney with his wife and was in Huntsville shopping. He practiced in Toronto 23 years and was born at Port Sydney. He served as a surgeon in the British Navy during WWI and studied at Jarvis Collegiate and the University of Toronto. Surviving are his widow Mildred Smith a son-in-law two daughters Joan and Ruth a brother William M Chester and a sister Hilda, all of Toronto.

Home Destroyed by Fire in South Ward

The Orone Fire Department was called at midnight Tuesday to extinguish a blaze at the home of Mr. Everett Cain in South Ward. The house was engulfed on arrival and practically destroyed. no one was at home. Firefighters were attending a Clarke Union Home and School Club meeting at the time.

Norman Allison Accepts CCF Nomination in Durham County

Norman Allison of Bowmanville and president of the Goodyear Union is the CCF candidate for Durham County in the provincial election on June 1. Four candidates were nominated but three withdrew in his favor. The meeting drew a capacity crowd in the council chamber as outside speakers urged a shift from old-line parties and big corporate power.

Oddfellows Attend Peterboro Rally Under Grand Lodge

Local 1.0.0.F members joined brethren from Florence Nightingale Lodge at Bowmanville to fill a chartered bus for a Peterboro rally led by W. J. McCarthy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge in Ontario.
