Curb Hi Grading Urged By Hon G Conant At Liberal Meeting

The Durham Liberal Association held its annual meeting at Orono Town Hall with many attendees. Officers elected include President H G Macklin and Vice President Garnet Shields. Messages stressed unity and Canadian democracy as MP F W Rieckard and others spoke, linking Liberal policy to national issues.

Life history of John Wesley told by Rev Osterhout

A large Park Street United Church congregation heard Rev J H Osterhout recount John Wesley life from childhood to ministry. He noted Wesley’s early Anglican years, later rise as a famed evangelist, and his 250000 miles of horseback preaching over fifty years. He warned of social unrest from haste envy and greed and urged turning to God to avert chaos.

William Bannon Dies After Long Illness at 66

After a lengthy illness William Bannon of Kirby died on May 12 at age 66. He was born in Hamilton Township and married Adeline Beacock 34 years ago. Funeral May 14 at Rev J H Osterhout church with interment in Orono Cemetery. Survived by wife, daughter Marion, sister and brother Robert. one son Osborne predeceased. Many Bannon relatives and friends from Peterboro and surrounding areas attended.

Mrs W H Read a Peterboro resident for 31 years died suddenly in her garden on Thursday. She was 66 years old.

Millbrook Girls Rout Orono in Softball Showdown

The Millbrook girls defeated Orono 22 to 12 on Friday. Millbrook led 5–0 in the first inning and built a big margin by the fifth, with Lillian Fowler pitching for Orono and key hits from multiple Millbrook players. Orono rallied at times but could not overcome the early deficit.

W M S quilting group of the W A held a Monday afternoon session in Park Street United Church basement with a supper and sociable evening to present Rev J H Osterhout and Mrs Osterhout. Mrs W M Stutt opened with an address and the mood mixed sadness and joy as they note their removal and future leisure.

Clarke United Defeats Salina In Opening Football Clash

A crowd of about 350 watched Clarke United beat Salina 3 to 0 at Community Park. John Keane and Gordon Leamen scored with assists, Jim Wood added a late goal as Clarke secured the win and clean sheet.

Life of Pauline Johnston Highlighted at Institute Meeting

At the Wo men s Institute annual gathering in Orono last Friday a nominating committee selected officers for 1988 39 with Mrs O W Rolph as president and Mrs M H Staples as 1st vice president The group approved donating 5 to the Institute for the Blind and covering Council Chamber rent during sewing classes Kathleen Stark reported on the Junior Girls Sewing Course led by Mrs F Larriman and achievements planned for an Achievement Day Mrs Chmara spoke on Ukrainian life and conditions under Poland with notes on labor and customs Piano solos by Anna Staples Pearl Cowan and Mrs Russell Rosborough followed a vote of thanks to the institute officers for their service. Local Leadership was accepted.

Sharp Left Turn Causes Accident on Highway 28

A westbound driver Neil Porter of Orono narrowly avoided serious injury on Highway 28 at Maple Grove when his car collided with eastbound Herb Flintoff from Oshawa. Flintoff turned left crossing into Neil’s path. Mrs Flintoff was thrown from the car but survived with shock. Flintoff’s vehicle severely damaged. Porter shaken, back seat injuring him. both cars sustaining extensive damage.
