Local Orange Lodges Entertain Departing Members Friday Night

The remains of Richard Best Thornton of Columbus Ohio were brought to Orono for burial in the Orono cemetery. Rev J H Osterhout conducted the service at the grave. Thornton born 1843 in Clarke Township was the son of John Thornton and Eliza Powers. He married Delia Whaley of Brockville and later moved to Woodstock then Columbus Ohio where he remarried. Surviving are three sons and one daughter with relatives attending from distance including Fidwin Thornton and son of Whadstock Wilbur Thornton and son of Detroit Mich and Norman Thornton Toronto.

Open verdict in death of Odessa youth Gerald Sharp

A coroner's jury at Bowmanville returned an open verdict in the death of 17 year old Gerald Sharp of Odessa. Sharp died in Kingston on January 24 from head injuries after his motorcycle collided with a car driven by J B Moat of Oakville in Newcastle around October 10 1937. The inquest, led by Coroner Dr W H Storie, heard Sharp was westbound on Highway No 2 when the collision occurred as Moat turned north to Orono. Crown attorney Col F D Boggs of Cobourg represented the crown.

Attends Anniversary at Tyrone Home for 80th Birthday

Mr. J. Brooks of Tyrone observed his four score birthday at the home of Leslie Brooks with attendance by Mr. Hamm and Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Davey. Guests enjoyed a pleasant gathering with cards and music as gifts were presented.

Brown Family Honored by Orange Lodge Members

A large gathering in Orono with IL, OBLA, and IOOF lodges presented Mr. and Mrs. GC A Brown and son George with gifts before their departure for Fenelon Falls. Guests from Newcastle and Bowmanville enjoyed cards, meals, and entertainment led by Neil Porter.

Brooks recounts family voyage and lifelong marriage wish

Mr. Brooks recalls his father crossing the Atlantic in sixteen weeks and notes he was born in Port Hope while the family home remains. He shares memories of earlier days and mentions he will celebrate forty four years of marriage this Christmas with friends wishing many more years of bliss.

Durham Junior Farmers Hold Annual Meeting

The Durham Junior Farmers Association met at Pontypool on Monday night May 16 with twenty five juniors present from most townships. RH Summers reviewed the county’s junior work and outlined plans for 1938. A field day will be held at Bethany on Saturday June 11 featuring a boys and girls softball, standard events, tug of war, a North Durham vs South Durham hard ball game, and an evening dance. New officers: Past President Jay Whittington South Monaghan, President John Rickard Newcastle, Vice President Harry Kennedy Cavan, Secretary Treasurer George McKnight Millbrook.
