Lotus Wins Second Mosport Race With Lotus 19

Francis Bradley driving a Lotus 19 dominates the 25 lap Dunlop Challenge Trophy at Mosport, finishing 55 seconds ahead of Dan Shaw in a Sadler MkV and about a minute before Herb Swan in a RS 61 Porsche. The win marks Bradley and Lotus strong contenders for the Player's 200 on June 9.

Local Horsemen Active On Spring Fair Circuit

The Uxbridge Spring Fair opened the harness racing season with four Orono horsemen posting wins. Jack Williams drove Happy's Mac to first and second in the Free-For-All amid a rough, dusty track. Bracelet trailed in two heats, Canne's Pride earned a 2nd and 3rd, and Cheskeyette Guy swept the 2:24 class. Bill Reid’s David Frisco won the half mile, while the day marked a strong start for local entries and upcoming races at Peterborough.

Howell Rowland dies after long illness at Bowmanville

Howell Rowland died at Bowmanville Hospital on May 18 1962 after years of declining health. Born 1880 at Lake Shore pioneer homestead in Clarke Township he lived much of his life there. He leaves a wife Mabel Holmes and children Hilda James Tamblyn William J Rowland Katharine and Robert with numerous grandchildren. Masonic rites were held and the funeral conducted at Crowe United Church Orono with interment at Bond Head Cemetery. He was active in Durham Lodge No 66 and community affairs.

Orone Forest Station Grows Eight Million Trees

Ontario Department nurseries ship 25 to 30 million trees for spring reforestation. Orone Forest Station produces eight million annually on a 350 acre site begun 40 years ago, with postwar expansion adding 1 000 acres. Most stock is pine and spruce, 2 percent hardwoods, with 70 percent sent to Crown lands and local forests.

Exercise At Orono Park Tonight

The Northumberland Durham Fire Fighters hold their monthly mutual aid meeting at Orono Park tonight at 7:30. Fire Chief Ross Mercer says instructions will cover fighting propane gas fires with a demonstration under Superior Propane and the Association. The Orono fire engine will be on duty and the public may view the program.

Gendebien Joins Players 200 At Mosport Park

Oliver Gendebien, entrying a Lotus 19, becomes third international driver in Canada's premier race at Mosport Park on June 9. He joins Rosebud Racing Team of Texas, aiming for his first Canadian win alongside Moss Gurney and Gregory, with 30 cars expected for the Player's Cup and $10,000 prize.

Bride Joan Allin Weds Neil Elliott in Weston Church

Joan Eleanor Allin and Neil Wesley Elliott united in marriage in a double ring ceremony at Western United Church Weston on May 18 1962. The bride wore a dress of blue chiffon with lace bolero and a white hat veil while carrying white mums and red rose buds. The reception followed at Westlyte Apartments.

Orono Opens With Win At Local Park In Five-Run Baseball Return

Orono Intermediate baseball opened with a 4 to 2 victory over Oshawa at Orono Park. Keith West pitched three solid innings, with Ted Stone closing, while Ronnie West, Dor Mercer, and Charles Armstrong drove in Orono’s runs. Oshawa tallied two in the seventh, but Orono's defense and two double plays sealed the win.

Hope IT'o Extend Technical Training at Port Hope High

Durham 4 H Livestock Judging Winners Named

The Durham County Livestock Judging Competition on May 12 in Bowmanville featured 4 H clubs judging dairy beef cattle swine and sheep across four farm stops. Top seniors were Donald Welsh Bowmanville Doug Joss Newcastle and Donald Rickard Bowmanville with Coach Donald Welsh leading the winning team.
