Orono 1869: A Thriving Ontario Village and Its Businesses

The 1869 Ontario Gazetteer lists Orono in Clarke Township Durham County with a population around 1000 and a long roster of local tradesmen. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union held its May meeting at President Mrs H Walsh’s home. The gathering opened with hymn singing and included psalm readings, devotional readings, a vocal solo, and participation in a Clip Sheet on Alcoholism. At the May 15 1956 gathering of the 4-H Home making Club eight members were present with Patsy Foster and Linda McAllister joining. The group dined together to practice table manners and service before a routine meeting, pledge led by Valena Copping, minutes and roll call. A business vote approved a wooden file sample as a reference. Home assignment asked members to plan a family meals day and read an item for discussion.

Durham District High School Board in Port Hope approved a five year lease for the Orono Public School and Millbrook classrooms after a 9 to 3 vote amid concerns over Bowmanville capacity. Mrs M C Fisher Speaks At Evening Auxiliary Meeting

The Eoen ng Auxiliary met at Glive Millson’s home on Thursday May 17 with Mrs Fisher as guest speaker. Selections, devotional remarks, scripture reading, prayers, and a guitar performance by Master Terry Carleton followed a brief business session. A missionary history talk, a poetry reading, and a program by Olive led to a vote of thanks. 46 ladies attended and lunch was served.
