Public School Pupils Present The Blue Belt Operetta In Orono

Orono Public School staged The Blue Belt in Town Hall featuring royalty fairies and a witch. Marvin Lunn led as King Golumpus while Denny Lynch played Prince Halvor and June Glanville portrayed the Witch. The performance showcased strong student groups and musical direction by Mgr. Neil Stewart, with Miss Goode and Miss Brook guiding fairy and gnome ensembles.

Five Speckled Trout Captivate Orono Club President

John Armstrong president of the Orono Fish and Hunt Club and Warren K. Cook of Toronto fished at Birch Lodge Plevna over the weekend securing ten speckled trout five by each weighing 234 to 3% pounds. They stopped in Ottawa to meet D Leo Dolan of the Dominion Government Travel Bureau who photographed them with their catch for a promotional pamphlet to promote Canadian fishing.

Ganaraska Conservation Scheme Opens with Tree Planting

A 1947 ceremony at Lot 34, Concession 9 Hope Township marked the opening of the Ganaraska Conservation Scheme. Minister William Goodfellow and Minister Dana Porter planted oak trees as local children sang. A crowd attended the event followed by coffee and doughnuts.

Health Unit Reviews April Progress In Cobourg Office

Board members and Ontario health officials met May 1 in Cobourg to assess staff, finance, and facilities. April saw 66 food establishment inspections, 28 milk farm checks, 31 private water tests, and expanded school lighting surveys along with rising communicable disease totals led by 98 cases of red measles and a scarlet fever cluster in Cobourg.

Trout Research on Wilmot Creek Inaugurated

The Fish and Wildlife Division of the Department of Lands and Forests launches a study on Wilmot Creek to improve Southern Ontario trout fishing. Researchers trap and tag brown trout, measure insect food per square yard, and track fish movements to gauge habitat use and water temperatures.

Silver Medal Contest at Perk United Church

The Silver Medal Contest, sponsored by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, will be held Friday May 28 in the Sunday School room of Perk United Church. Many contestants are to participate with other items on the program. The Newtonville public school orchestra is expected. Admission Adults 25 cents Children 10 cents.

Ontario Pasture Improvement Project Aims to Demonstrate Gains

The Ontario Department of Agriculture announces the Problem Pasture Project to improve unworked permanent pastures. One five acre field per county will be selected before September 1, 1947 with a three acre check plot. The program provides seed and up to 800 pounds of fertilizer per acre in spring 1948 and assigns responsibilities to landowners and the County Crop Improvement Association. A second project tests cattle preferences for forage types using three acre plots divided into quarter acre lots to guide future pasture choices.
