The Orono Chamber of Commerce held a May meeting at Kumrite Apartments with plans for July 1 field day and dance. Committees were named for sports and dance arrangements and proceeds will go to the Orono Amateur Athletic Association to support a larger event.
The Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces that the first five canning sugar coupons become valid May 15. The Y coupons cover canning sugar this year, with Yi and Y5 valid May 15, and each five additional coupons valid July 17. Coupons may also buy rationed jams, jellies, and preserves.
Senior and Brownie units continue guide work under Capt Armstrong and leaders. Girls study First Aid music and morse code while Miss Penifound teaches reed work basket making. New badges noted for Shirley Flintoff and cooking tests achieved by Mary Ann Armstrong and Lorna Lewis. Upcoming hike to the woods on May 17 with a rain date.
Orono Bantam Hockey Club hosted a concert and dance in Orono Town Hall on May 9 to celebrate a season that saw the team reach the Ontario Bantam semifinals. Players received mounted team pictures, coach and manager presenting keepsakes as Roy Forrester’s band played.
Alma Cuttell received a letter from Fred Honey a former Orono boy who donated five dollars for park improvements in Orono He expressed interest in Arthur Maguire’s letter to the editor and support for keeping former Orono youths in touch through the column Honey also liked Johny Armstrong’s piece mentioning his mother and regret that Bill Armstrong did not call while in California this winter He signed the note from Redlands California Franklin Ave at Oak St
The Teen Township executive clears the summer schedule due to two sponsors being away. Mrs H Flintoff in Toronto and Mr T Lewis in hospital for five weeks. A fall planning meeting will occur to map the program. The financial report notes residents should review how funds are spent. Signed Carl Flintoff, Clerk, Orville Chatterton, Reeve.
Mrs Arnold Thorndyke and other locals visited relatives in Osaca Port Hope and Morrish while Toronto and Newtonville guests joined a Mother's Day program at the church. The Junior Choir led by Mrs Carroll Nicholls performed and Dr Oke spoke on Honouring our Parents.
Clarke Township Council met in the Council Chamber Orono on May 6 with all members present. The clerk reported hospital costs and was instructed to stop further collection efforts. A CN R letter about the overhead bridge was discussed. 16 tons deemed insufficient. Funds for the Orono Park grader were limited to use this spring. Newtonville Monument site duties were transferred to the Ontario Department of Highways. Several resolutions covered insurance, street oiling, transfer of Newtonville memorial, ten new street renewals, sale of the Orono township building, and expanding the Clarke Township School Area. The by law to enlarge the school area and debt borrowing up to 25 000 were approved. Multiple bills were ordered paid and a committee named to plan machinery use.
Federation Of Agriculture announces a picnic on June 21 at Ten Mile Run. Alfred Moment, 78, longtime Montclair resident and church member, died at Princeton Hospital after a brief illness. He leaves a son Gardner Moment and two daughters, plus siblings and extended family. Funeral held at Mather Funeral Home Princeton with burial in Ten Mile Run Cemetery.
The Clarke Union Home and School Association met on May 18 and elected officers for the ensuing year. President Mrs H Alien, Vice President Gordon Power, Treasurer Bryan Rainey, Press Reporter Neil Rainey, Secretary Mrs JG Power, Pianist Mrs Sandercock, Assistant Pianist Mrs C Stapleton, and an executive committee including Mrs E Rainey Gwen Chatterton Neil Rainey Charlie Stapleton and Mr Chatterton.
Mr Stapleton moved a vote of thanks to Dr Sherwin and those who took part in the programme. The meeting closed with the singing of God Save the King. Lunch followed, served by the committee in charge, and a social time was enjoyed.
Mr and Mrs John W Berry marked a silver wedding anniversary at the home of Mrs Giddus Jones in Bowmanville. Sisters and relatives attended a evening with games music and a carved walnut coffee table presented as a keepsake. A large table, wedding cake, and candles framed the celebration amid illness and bad roads delaying the event.
