Foote Nominated Durham Conservative Candidate at Local Convention

Hon. John Foote V C was unanimously chosen as the Conservative candidate for Durham riding at the Durham Progressive Conservative Convention held in Clarke Township Halls Orono. About four hundred delegates approved the nomination amid remarks by Mr. Stewart Ryan and others.

Local Fisherman Catches 24 inch Rainbow Trout

Weekend fishing news highlights Cliff Cooper landing a 24 inch rainbow trout over five pounds after a fifteen minute fight. The catch was on the Pickerel opening weekend though the location remains unnamed. Charles Armstrong swam to Jackson's Pond in Kendal to escape a barking dog then befriended the animal.

Liberals Name Bay Candidate After Convention

The Liberal party picks David Ford of Port Hope as provincial election candidate after a rapid turnaround. A county meeting to welcome him is set for May 24 at 8:30 in Orono Town Hall with plans to invite Reeve Crockford of Scarborough as guest speaker.

St Saviour s W A held its May meeting after postponements due to illness. Mrs C Grant and Mrs R Taggart were elected president and vice president for 1955. A June picnic supper with races and prizes for children is planned at Orono Park at 6 pm on a Thursday.

Grace Moore dies. Orono teacher mourned in Singhampton

Grace Jennie Moore, a Nrono High School language teacher for two years, died suddenly Friday May 18. The funeral was held Monday May 16 at Anelican Church Singhampton with interment at Linehampton Cemetery. Attendees included Mr B Rutherford and Miss Armstrong among Orono colleagues.

Liberal Convention Fails To Secure Durham Candidate

The Liberal Convention in Orono failed to nominate a candidate for the June 9 election as eleven nominees declined. About 150 delegates attended with platform guests including M.P. John James and M.P. Paul Hellyer. A new slate later emerged but also declined, leaving the party without a candidate and pledging support to Liberal aims.

Orono Baseball Joins Lakeshore Intermedial League

Orono announces entry into the Lakeshore Intermedial League elevating its class for the season. The squad plans a bye into the OBA playdowns this fall and will field its championship lineup plus new players from Port Hope. Opening game is May 24 at Bowmanville with a 10:30 a.m. first pitch.

June Heron and Larry Miller Win Silver Medals

A silver medal contest held in the Sunday School auditorium of Queen Street Church on May 1 featured June Heron and Larry Miller receiving silver medals. Judges chose the winners after performances including elocution by Joan Vage, Karen Miller, and others, with piano selections by Miss Joan Allin and vocal items by Mrs. Chapman.
