Orono Variety Concert Raises Funds for Choir

The Orono United Church Choir hosted a May 6 variety concert at Orono Town Hall drawing about 175 attendees. Gross proceeds reached 75 dollars for choir supplies, featuring soloists William Mitchell Jack Allin Glenn Allin and others with songs like Sweet Adeline If you were the only boy and A Marriage Proposal play by Junior Farmers members.

Newcastle Lions Club Installs Playground at City Park

Newcastle Lions Club members gathered Wednesday to complete installation of playground equipment at Newcastle Park. The setup includes an 18 foot slide two teeter totters a trio of swings a bar swing and ring swings and a large sandbox funded jointly by the Newcastle Lionettes and the Newcastle Lions.

Five youths escape death as train slams car at crossing

An Ajax driver and three Oshawa girls barely survived a stalled 1948 Chevrolet at a CNR level crossing on Wharf Road Bowmanville as a Montreal Toronto flyer struck the vehicle. The car was pushed a mile along the tracks. all five headed for a dance when the crash occurred.

Thirteen Children Baptized At United Church On Sunday

Mother's Day service at Orono United Church May 8 drew a capacity crowd. Rev. Orono Oddfellows Attend Devirie Service And Parades

The Orono Oddfellows held their annual Church Parades on Sunday May 8 with about forty lodge members and visiting lodges attending Divine Service at St Saviour's Anglican Church. The Crono Band led a parade from 1 C C F Hall on Churéed Street to the church and back. The Rev D R Dewdney praised the lodge for its community service and noted the village building project now active in local life. The pastor preached on Christianity as the highest priority guiding Christian living and thought.

Open House at Memorial Hospital Marks Nightingale Day

Bowmanville Memorial Hospital hosts an Open House sponsored by the Bowmanville Nurses Association on Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Miss Irene Shaw oversees tours from 2:30 to 5 PM and 7 to 8 PM with afternoon tea. Two films, House of Mercy and Life in Her Hands, will screen. admission is free.

Ten Thousand Pine Planted In Ganaraska By Boy Scouts

Port Hope hosted a two day tree planting drive by district scouts in the Ganaraska Forest. About 260 scouts from Port Hope Cobourg Port Colborne Marmora Omemee Trenton and Peterborough planted 10000 white pine seedlings.

Brampton Teacher Named Orono High Principal for 1955 56

Warren W. Watt, teacher from Brampton with eight years in secondary schools, has signed to lead Orono High School beginning the 1955 56 term. Replacement for Mr Mc Callion not yet found. board also seeks three or four teachers for four area schools.

Ontario and Durham WCTU Holds 1955 Whitby Convention

The fifty ninth annual Ontario and Durham Women’s Christian Temperance Union convention met April 28, 1955, at Whitby Baptist Church. Mrs. Clayton Lee challenged members to collective effort as devotionals by Mrs. A H Mitchell and Mrs. D J Kean centered on Love from St John’s gospel. Committees were formed, with Mrs. H G Willes of Oshawa named for Plan of action.

Air Cadet Tag Day Raises 40.45 in Orono

Orono residents contributed 40.45 to the Air Cadet Tag Day fund held Saturday. Cadets canvassed the village with Commanding Officer R J Taggart pleased with results. Proceeds will aid uniforms and equipment for the local squadron.

Orone Scouts Hit Three Ton Paper Drive Total

The Orone Boy Scouts collected three tons of paper on the latest drive held last Saturday. Over two drives in total more than seven tons have been gathered. Proceeds support local scouting. the next collection is set for Saturday June 4 at 9:00 a.m.

Orono Lodge honors long service with 25 and 50 year jewels

At the Orono Lodge No. 486 I. O. O. F. meeting on May 4 the 50 year jewel was presented to Ben White P.G. by Jas. Anderson P.G. and the 25 year jewel to John Gibson P.G. Robt Chater P.G. also received a jewel. Robt. Cornforth will later be honored at home due to health.

Woman's Association May Meeting Proceedings

The Woman's Association held its May gathering in the Sunday School Auditorium with Mrs. E. Rainey presiding. Readings included a Collect by Mary Stewart and hymns, minutes by Miss E. Penfound, and Devotional led by Miss Davy.

Orono Completes Fire Protection Area Agreement

Orono completes fire protection area agreement extending coverage to properties outside the village. The plan sets $5 per year per building set and $100 per fire call with inspection by the Orono Fire Chief and priority given to calls within Orono or under the Mutual Aid Plan.

Orono Fair Sets Grandstand Show For 1955

Orono Fair completes grandstand entertainment plans with a musical show by the Ski Linex's Trio. The board expands cattle classes adding Guernsey dairy and Jersey divisions plus Belgian and Punch departments. Directors added new members to energize exhibits as the province’s leading fair.

Orono Fire Dept Tests New Hose and Fog Nozzles

The Orono Fire Brigade tested new equipment during a Monday practice. They added two hundred feet of 1.5 inch hose and two fog nozzles, with the lighter hose proving easier to handle and capable of supplying two water flows from one pump. Also checked village water tanks, finding all but one full and noting needed repairs to the tank in front of Mrs. Winter’s.
