Baptism Held for Ten At Orono United Church

Mother's Day services at Orono United Church featured Rev. Basil Long delivering a sermon on the heart as the true home. Ten children were baptized including Patricia Ann Forbes, June Mary Jane Forbes, Mellanie Jayne Gamsby, Douglas Gary Hancock, Murray Bruce Hancock, Janice Elaine Heard, Barbara Ann Partridge, Keith William Forbes Powell, Jo-Anne Elaine Tennant, and John Dean West.

Orono Athletic Rummage Sale Seeks Donations

The Orono/udatieur Athletic Association schedules a rummage sale on May 24 at 7:00 PM at Orono Municipal Centre to fund softball baseball and a summer park supervisor. Donations including books dishes furniture tools and other usable items are requested contact Mrs. R. Taggart to arrange pick up.

Bay of Quinte W A Meets in Whitby For Last Time

The tenth annual Bay of Quinte Conference of the Woman's Association of the United Church of Canada met at Whitby United Church led by president Mrs G E Dobbs Belleville. The event featured talks by Rev Douglas Pilkey and a move toward forming the United Church Women in 1962. Coral readings, Holy Communion, film on church work among Indians, and various reports highlighted the program.

Meeting Notes From Orono United Church Women

The May meeting of the Women s Association of Orono United Church was held May 11 in the Sunday school room. President Mrs H Allen chaired and welcomed members and honored guests including Lyris Irwin and Mrs Cornish back from California. A wedding catering for June 8 was decided and a June 28 annual supper planned. A $25 donation for overseas clothing bales and $10 to Camp Pretoria were approved. Reports from officers covered Presbytery events in Oshawa on April 28.

The Durham District High School Board won a county court suit against the Cobourg District Collegiate Institute Board for about 500 dollars in tuition for Joan May, who lived near Dale and attended Port Hope High School for three years. Juvenile Girls Open Softball Schedule in Orono

The Orono Girls Juvenile Softball team coached by Jim Gamsby hosts an exhibition Monday at Orono Park against Bowmanville after a pre season practice with about thirty girls. The regular schedule starts June 19 with games at Bowmanville Oshawa Newcastle and Port Hope, and home bouts against Bowmanville Newcastle.

Five Year Sentence For Fraud Is Handed Down

Wilbert E. Summer 38 year old Raglan area farmer pleaded guilty to 35 charges of fraud involving 148106.05 dollars. He was sentenced to five years in Portsmouth Penitentiary Kingston after admitting obtaining funds from residents in Orono Oshawa Whitby Bowmanville Port Hope by false pretences. He was remanded to Cobourg and then to Kingston for sentencing.

The Orono Intermediates start their baseball season Monday afternoon in Orono with Belleville visiting for a 3 PM opener. The five team league includes Belleville, Orono, Port Hope, Newcastle, and Peterborough.

Orono Fireworks Display Slated For May 22

Orono hosts a Community Ground and Aerial Fireworks Display at the Orono Fair Grounds Monday evening starting at dark sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce. The Kontinental Kar Klub will model drag strip cars and host a Car Bang to raise funds for safety equipment. The event follows a Friday village canvass that collected 95 dollars toward the display, with total costs around 200 dollars.

Mother and Daughter Banquet Draws 160 In Orono

The Orono Rangers Guides and Brownies hosted a Mother and Daughter Banquet on May 6 at the Orono United Church Sunday School Room. Over 150 mothers and daughters attended a turkey dinner with blue and gold decorations. Speakers and toasts honored mothers and the guiding groups while a short program featured songs square dances and wildlife pictures.

Park Board Sets Charge For New Swim Pool

The Orono Park Board sets pool use rates for a new pool opening in June. Skimming costs 35 cents for all. school children may buy season tickets at 5 8 10 dollars with Sunday limits. A life guard and tags cost about 1000 to 1200 dollars to operate. Applications for lifeguard positions accepted until May 29. Red Cross swimming instruction considered with a 75 dollar fee. Donations sought to cover remaining financing.
