The Orono Chamber of Commerce met with 12 members to discuss local events. They heard from Kontinental Kar Klub rep Gary Challice about fundraising car events and approved lighting the Orono sign.
Three small clubs are forming in Orono the PeeWee Bantam baseball teams and the Junior Girls softball team. The PeeWees and Bantams will join the Lake shore Minor League under coaches Carman Cornish and Harvey Partner. The Junior Girls are led by Jim Gamsby.
The Durham Northumberland and Renfrew Tobacco Growers Association met with Durham Agricultural Society directors in Oddfellow's Hall to arrange the Tobacco Evening on Friday September 8 at the Agricultural Grounds. Events include Tobacco Exhibits Tieing Contest and crowning of the tobacco Queen and King with all presentations held that same night.
Newcastle expects water flow from the new Peel Construction system under Ontario Water Resources supervision within a week. Dwellings connect as capital costs are charged by 3.5 mills plus 30 cents per foot frontage tax, with operating costs on a use basis. The system will be fluoridated per health department recommendations and United Counties Health Unit sanction.
On June 28 1961 residents of Orono Ontario can buy a new 5 cent commemorative stamp marking the tenth anniversary of the Colombo Plan. Stamps go on sale at the Orono Post Office for collectors and postal patrons. The Orono Amateur Athletic Association hosts a rummage sale May 24 at 7 00 pm in the Orono Municipal Building to fund youth sports and the summer park program. Ruth Taggart coordinates pickups at 1062.
Ninety five fathers and sons attended the Orono Scouts and Cubs Father and Son Banquet held at the Orono United Church basement. A Turkey dinner was served by the Ladies Auxiliary. District Council leaders spoke urging greater father involvement and a film presentation closed the evening.
The Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its May meeting with twenty directors, chaired by Harvey Malcolm. Plans discussed include a Blitz collaboration with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the County Co-op to canvass farm families for FAME shares, aiming for 32000 total, plus a cooperative livestock marketing option and a 50 donation from the Ontario federation to boost the effort.
The Orone Memorial Park Board meets to discuss completing the new swimming pool. Equipment including filters diving board vacuum ladders and purifier has arrived and will be installed. Fencing and concrete walk will be poured. A full time lifeguard will operate the pool and a representative from the Red Cross and Clarke Township Recreation Commission are to attend a meeting. Vic Homewood’s booth rental for park operation is approved. A remaining $1200 funds shortfall persists with donations accepted at Ralph's Hardware or Alma Cuttell.
A Orono Club meeting elected officers for baseball and set opening game for May 22 in Orono Park. The Orono Horticultural Society will hold a Spring Flower Show May 25 at LOOF Hall with a plant sale to benefit the Junior Gardener's Club.
Decision reserved in a 1958 dispute over tuition for Joan May, an 18 year old in grade 13 at Port Hope High School. Durham County board seeks about 500 for her education, arguing she should attend Cobourg, while Port Hope opted for convenience. The case involves Northumberland County and local school boards with no delivery date set.
The Heather Rebekah Lodge No. 334 notes a wheel chair purchase by the C P T Committee. Maude Cooper presided and Emma Gunn reported on visiting and a shut-in. Mae Allen announced the chair and a hospital bed cover. Memorial Day June 13 is to be observed with arrangements to follow.
Orono Fireworks display set for May 22 at dark sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce. Cub Pack plans a canvass of village homes this Friday evening May 12 to raise at least 200 dollars and residents are asked to prepare for the town youths.
