Ten Contestants Vie For Laurels In Public Speaking
A large audience attended a codex Medal Contest on Sunday May 1 at Mason Hall Orono. Rev Eustace Husface led the program with judges Mrs Percy Hare Miss Tena Ferguson and Garnet Rickard. Ten contestants—six girls Lovelene Koropatna Muriel Gibson Eleanor Osborne Donna Brunt Wthel Strickland Gwen Thompson and four boys Donald Leask Bernard Lynch Francis Bruton Milton Rainey—performed and were judged. Lovelene Koropatna won for the girls and Donald Leask for the boys. Prizes in poster and essay contests were also awarded by Rev Eustace and Mrs Hare. The event featured music by Lynch Rowe orchestra Joyce Sutton Doug Lycett and Jean Rainey with National Anthem at close.

Orono and area mourn the death of William Albert Harris born February 21 1878 on the Six Line Clarke Township. He worked farming then Goodyear Bowmanville and lived in Orono with his wife Caroline Amelia Balding. Survived by wife son Lawrence two daughters and nine grandchildren. Funeral held at his residence with Rev A E Eustace officiating. Interment in Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers included nephews and local men. Many relatives attended from Sundridge Orillia Brampton Toronto Lindsay Oshawa. Heather Rebekah Lodge sent flowers.

Orono Red Cross sent a supply carton to Winnipeg to aid flood workers after church collections. Orono Football Club Formed For Senior Season
A meeting at Ed Neilson's place established the Orono Senior Football Club with officers led by President Carl Flintoff and secretary Doug Simpson. The Orono Oddfellows held a church parade on Sunday May 14 with about fifty lodge members joining the Orono United Church service. The group marched with the Orono Brass Band to St Saviour's Anglican Church where Rev A B Hustace spoke on friendship. Rebekah choir and soloist Gladys Brown plus Mary Phasey and Cora Cantrell sang. Members from Cobourg Port Hope and Bowmanville lodges joined. A second parade is planned for Legard on May 28 with the brass band expected.
