The Orono Chamber of Commerce refuses to seek additional funds for medical and dental student aid, stating existing assistance is not exhausted. Members note loan nature of aid and urge more money to help students finance education while planning related events and initiatives for the community.
A group of boys who played ball and hockey together gathered at the Orono United Church for a pot luck supper. Mrs. Sterling Mather Mrs. Bert Black and Mrs. John Moffat organized decorations. John Moffat spoke of the long friendship, sports travels, and discipline that built their team. Rev. Long urged service to others and thanked the coaches, especially Dr. Peter Maartense, for years of leadership.
The Orono Oddfellows Lodge held a Sunday combined service with the Orono United Church after a brief gathering at the cenotaph. District Deputy Governor Harry Wade spoke, a wreath was laid, and the Last Post was sounded by C Tamblyn and Stirling Mather who led a church service on courage. The parade was led by the Crone Band, aided by junior members.
The Orono Junior Band will join Courtice High School musicians for practice on Monday as they prepare for a concert at Courtice High School. The concert, scheduled for Thursday evening May 25, will feature both the Orono and Courtice bands performing separately and together.
A juvenile hockey squad honored their coach, Andy Murphy, and assistant Cameron Perrault by inviting him to the forefront in a surprise gesture, signaling appreciation for a season of effort and teamwork. Continued on page 6.
A Orono community centennial celebration list includes a Centennial Ball on Friday July 7 as part of a week of events July 4 through July 9. The week features Talent Night Beef Bar B Q Old Time Fiddlers Contest and other activities with proceeds aiding the artificial ice fund. Local groups like Hockey Mothers and UCW back the plans.
Centennial event May 138th at 2 39 p m in the Main hall of Ovens United Church. Wear old fashioned costumes and browse a 19th century room with rest areas. Continued on page 5.
A payroll clerk from Curvply Wood Products wed after a stag party hosted by Paul Groene veld. The couple will live in the Cornish Apartments, Orono, marking a small office wedding with limited presentations from staff and management and male employees.
The Orono Park Board, in a Tuesday meeting, approved opening the swimming pool on Saturday June 3 weather permitting. EH H Samuel gave Stetson gifts to members to promote the Centennial Beef Bar B Q July 5 at the Orono Park, with tickets now on sale. Park Booth rental went to W Homewood. Discussion covered a June 18 church service, parking issues, and a planned park area unveiling for Clarke Township Centennial Project.
Clarke Township committee outlines finishing plans for a 22 acre Centennial nature area along Orono creek south and north of Orono Park. Officials plan to open July 5 during Beef Bar B Q with northern section developed as a nature picnic area, guided by signs and a map.
